[Sprint] New Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ update brings nothing but September security patch

Samsung began the rollout of the September patchset with the Galaxy Note 10 lineup. The mid-ranger Galaxy A30 joined the roster shortly after. The Sprint branded Galaxy Note 10 got the same yesterday, alongside some regional variants of Galaxy A7 (2018).

Samsung fans should find it rather annoying that the other flagship of this year, i.e. the Galaxy S10 family, has yet to receive the most up-to-date security patch. On the other hand, the one year old Galaxy S9 finally got dedicated camera night mode and QR scanner on the US unlocked model a few days ago.

Talking about Galaxy S9, the legacy flagship from the Korean OEM was blessed with camera enhancements as well as the August patches during the mid of last month. The sage started with the global Exynos units first, then expanded to the US Snapdragon models.

Time for the good news! Samsung is now pushing the September patch for the global Galaxy S9/S9+ across multiple regions. The incremental OTA weighs about 122 MB, and it bumps the software version number form CSGD to CSH5.

The letter ‘H’ indicates that the build was compiled on the eighth month, i.e. August. Not very surprising though, as Android OEMs do have access to the security patches long before public availability. Although we have seen Samsung firmware binaries built in September, but for a different device.

The bootloader version, once again, remains unchanged (v6). As a result, users can safely downgrade to the older software versions (with same bootloader level) if they want. The letter before the bootloader identifier is ‘S’ (G96xFXXS6CSH5), which means Samsung did not include any major improvement in this update.

As you can see, the update is also available on the Galaxy S9+ units. Both of these phones are scheduled to get Android 10 based One UI 2.0 update in the coming months, but we don’t have an exact ETA. Rest assured, S9/S9+ owners can enjoy the latest features from Samsung for another year or so.

If you want to skip the waiting queue, opt for something like Frija to download the firmware from Samsung update servers. You still need a PC and a flashing tool like ODIN or Heimdall to complete the remaining flashing part.
