Galaxy S8 (Exynos) October security update arrives, AT&T S8 gets Advanced Messaging v2

At a time when the global variants of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are receiving their updates to October 2019 security patches, some carrier units in the U.S. are still riding on the August security patches.

While Verizon Wireless did roll out its Galaxy S8 September security patches, those on T-Mobile and AT&T are still stuck on August security patches.

Matter of fact, T-Mobile recently rolled out a second software update with the same August security patch but with a new QR code reader function. As it stands, AT&T is also borrowing a leaf from this book with the latest Galaxy S8 software update.

Arriving as version G950USQU6DSH8 for the S8 and G955USQU6DSH8 for the S8+, the build number is identical to the second T-Mobile Galaxy S8 and S8+ August updates, but the changelog isn’t the same throughout.

Besides lagging behind with the August patches, the AT&T Galaxy S8 update also brings support for Advanced Messaging v2. This is a similar update to the one the carrier recently pushed to the Galaxy Note 8.

Even more interesting is that the AT&T Galaxy Note 8 is also stuck on the August security patch level, just like the S8 and S8+. Given that these phones won’t be upgraded to Android 10, it remains to be seen how frequent carrier variants will continue receiving security updates.

As noted at the beginning, the Exynos variants of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ sold across Europe, Asia, and Africa are now receiving their updates to October security patches.

The updates are arriving over the air as version G950FXXS5DSJ1 for the S8 and G955FXXS5DSJ1 for the S8+. The changelog doesn’t stretch beyond the security patches, but I assume the usual bug fixes and performance improvements are included.
