TCL Communication is the licensee of the Blackberry smartphone brand and basically the company that makes the Android-powered BlackBerry smartphones sold in most global markets other than Indonesia and some Southeast Asian countries.

While you probably know more about TCL from the smart TV hanging on the wall in your living room, the company recently came out of BlackBerry’s and Alcatel’s shadows by unveiling its own TCL-branded smartphone at the IFA 2019 – the TCL PLEX.

The phone is a solid mid-ranger rocking a 6.53-inch FHD+ LCD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675, 6GB of RAM, plenty of expandable storage, a decent triple-camera setup on paper, and yea, it keeps the headphone jack. Availability starts this quarter in Europe priced at 329 euros.

TCL’s entry into the smartphone market shouldn’t affect the existing deal with BlackBerry. The Canadian company should continue maintaining and providing software support to the global variants of the BlackBerry Android smartphones made by TCL, current and future models.

One current model that is on the receiving end of a new software update is the BlackBerry Motion. The device, as of this writing, is receiving a new September 2019 security update in multiple markets across the globe.

The software update is arriving as version ACD519 and so far, it has been spotted in multiple markets across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. The variants currently receiving the update have model numbers BBD100-1, BBD100-2, and BBD100-6, so yea, it’s a global thingy.

The BlackBerry Motion update is still based on Android 8.1 Oreo, the OS that the device received as probably its one and only major software upgrade. It’s unlikely that Android Pie will be pushed to this handset, but security patches should keep coming from time to time.

Some BlackBerry Motion units received their September security update nearly two weeks ago while its only now that others are getting this same update. That’s just how OTA updates roll out, so don’t be surprised if you haven’t received the update yet.

A techy. Besides phones, I also enjoy the farm, music, football, and, of course, food.
