New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
The BBC iPlayer turns 12 next month. At the time of its launch, it was meant to provide BBC fans a way to catch-up on shows aired within the past week on-demand, but things have since changed dramatically and even more changes are expected in the future.
Plans to redesign the BBC iPlayer are on course as the on-demand streaming service aims to match its U.S. rivals namely Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in the business.
Like most streaming services in the modern-day, the BBC iPlayer is available on multiple platforms/devices that include Android, iOS, Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV Stick, and Google Chromecast, Android TV Set-Top Boxes, among others.
But as it has always been the case with software, the BBC iPlayer may encounter bugs from time to time. As of this writing, for instance, reports just coming in can confirm that the on-demand streaming service is suddenly missing from the NVIDIA Shield TV.
Affected users on the NVIDIA Shield TV say the app was there but suddenly disappeared from the app store overnight, although it’s still there on the device.
So, overnight, BBC iPlayer has vanished from our Shield. Nowhere to be seen in the app store either. Has this happened to anyone else?

Opened up the shield TV today and the BBC iPlayer app has disappeared! Same for my friend too. I am in the UK. Any idea what’s going on?

Apparently, it’s not only the BBC iPlayer that has disappeared from the Shield TV, but also the ITV Hub app.

As you can see from the screengrab above, some affected users say rebooting the NVIDIA Shield TV fixes the issue, but then the iPlayer and ITV Hub apps disappear again after a while.
Another affected Redditor also claims the BBC iPlayer app has somehow re-appeared after it went MIA on their Shield TV, so it looks like the issue could be addressed from the server-side.
It’s also likely that the affected apps could be updated with fixes to this issue, but we don’t know when. We will be following up on this story and bring you updates as and when we get them. Stay tuned.
Update (November 22)
NVIDIA has come out to acknowledge the BBC iPlayer bug on the Shield TV, claiming the issue has been addressed by Google. In case you are still experiencing it, there is a workaround. Details here.
