It’s that time of the year when we expect to see a new Razer Phone 3 smartphone taking over from the Razer Phone 2. The latter came out in October 2018 as a successor to the OG model from November 2017, but not much has been said about its successor.
Earlier this year, Razer laid off about 30 workers who allegedly had close ties with the Razer Phone 3, implying that the development of the device had been canceled.
Razer has made changes to realign our organization and strengthen our path to growth. We will centralize our resources to focus on key projects and improve our profitability. As part of the realignment, we shut down several projects and unfortunately had to part ways with about 30 employees (about 2% of our total workforce). Other employees of the affected projects will be moved to different parts of Razer to work on other key focus projects and initiatives which will continue to scale and hire.
In the above statement sent to Droid Life, Razer did admit to shutting down some projects and laying off 2% of its workforce in a move meant to “realign our organization and strengthen our path to growth.”
While Razer did not mention anything specific to the Razer Phone 3, the company did confirm that some of those who were laid off were from the mobile division. Apparently, others in the same division who managed to keep their jobs were moved on to other projects.
In our mobile division, there were some staff members who were let go, and others who were reassigned to other new projects. We see great opportunities in the mobile gaming space that we created with the Razer Phone and will continue to invest in this category through a combination of hardware and software initiatives. We are working on new exciting mobile projects and will share the news when we are ready. The Razer Phone 2 will continue to be on sale and we are committed to supporting it with the latest updates and features.
As you can see from the statement above, Razer did promise to keep supporting the Razer Phone 2 with the latest software updates and features, among them regular Android security patches and bug fixes.
And the company is trying its best to live up to this promise with a new Razer Phone 2 software update arriving on the gaming phone with an updated Android security patch level dated September 2019.
The update was long overdue with the device having received its previous update back in late July with July patches. So far, the AT&T variant is the one receiving the new OTA, but it should be heading your way in the coming days or weeks for that matter.
The OTA weighs 81.7MB, so don’t expect anything new out of the ordinary, that is, the usual bug fixes and stability improvements that often accompany Android security updates.
It’s worth noting that OTA updates may take several days to show up on all AT&T units, so be patient as you wait. AT&T hasn’t updated its software support page with this info, but it should do pretty soon.
