Just in time!

Asus is not users’ favorite when it comes to firmware updates. From delayed to half-baked updates, the OEM pretty much has a bad repo. But the company’s current flagship ZenFone 6 (aka Asus 6z) has been an exceptional case considering the frequent updates that have been hitting the device.

ZenFone 6 is the only Asus device that has received the latest August Android security update – the patch which also improved audio quality & video call tuning quality. But that changes now, as the August patch is making way to couple of more devices – ZenFone Max M2 and ZenFone 5Q.

ZenFone Max M2

ZenFone Max M2 (ZB633KL) is a 2018 device mid-range device that is fueled with a Snapdragon 632 processor. The phone came with Android 8.1 Oreo and was bumped to Android 9.0 Pie back in April along with ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Max Pro M2 devices.

Coming to the present day, few hours back, Asus announced the August update by sharing the release notes at ZenTalk forums. Circulating as FOTA, the patch bears build number 16.2018.1908.48, and notifies to improve the device’s charging efficiency, and bring along long charging protection.

Here’s what the complete update release notes read:

【Release Note】
1. 2019-8 Google security patch updated
2. Import Long charging protection function
3. Improve charging efficiency

Don’t forget, it’s a FOTA, and hence may take time to hit all Max M2 units. So no point checking for the notification again and again. However, those of you impatient can always download the firmware manually.

ZenFone 5Q/5 Lite/5 Selfie Pro (ZC600KL)

Another Asus device that’s welcoming the August Android security patch is the ZenFone 5 Selfie Pro (also known as ZenFone 5Q in the US, and ZenFone 5 Lite in some regions). Just recently, the Snapdragon 430 variant (ZenFone 5 Selfie) was upgraded to Android Pie, something the 630 SoC variant (ZenFone 5 Selfie Pro) received months ago.

As for the latest, the August update pushed to ZenFone 5Q/5 Lite/5 Selfie Pro carries version number 16.0610.1908.83. The small changelog notifies Audio FW adjustment other than the upgraded security patch. Take a look:

【Release Note】
1. Upgrade July, August security patch
2. Adjust Audio FW

Mind you this is a FOTA update. Usually, such updates may take several days before all targeted units receive the download notification. So you’ll have to be patient as you wait for the software to arrive on your device.

You can also try forcing the update via the software update option in the Settings menu, or download it manually. Which way to use, that’s completely up to you. Happy installing is all we can say.

Update 1 (September 04)

The August update is now available for ZenFone Max M2 JP SKU as well. The changelog is however slightly different according to which the Japanese variants are now getting Android Pie 9.0. Here’s a translated version of the changelog:

[Release Note]
