Asus ZenFone 6 aka Asus 6Z is one of the most eye-catching smartphones to come out in 2019. What popularized the Asus 6Z is the motorized main camera that flips up to become the selfie shooter alongside the massive 5000mAh battery unit.

As if not enough, the phone also comes with top-end hardware that includes Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, 8GB RAM, 256GB expandable storage, wireless and reverse wireless charging, the combination of a USB Type-C and 3.5mm audio jack, and more; yet priced at just $500 (INR 31,999).

Unlike other companies that chose the pop-up camera in order to avoid having a notched display screen, Asus went with a novel design that surely caught the attention of many. And while it’s true the ZenFone 6 is one hell of a phone, the road has been quite bumpy for owners of the device.

One of the early issues to be reported was screen flickering when the brightness is set to a low level. This is the same issue that the increasingly popular DC Dimming feature is here to fix on smartphones, but only for AMOLED panels. Unfortunately, the 6Z has an LCD panel.

Not long ago, a software update was pushed to the ZenFone 6Z and besides introducing a couple of improvements, the same update also brought damages to the motherboard of the phone forcing Asus to suggest replacement of faulty units as a remedy. There have also been reports of call quality issues, flip camera issues and even some concerns about delayed security updates.

It’s now emerging that the Asus ZenFone 6 has developed another issue related to sound. Apparently, the are multiple cases related to the earpiece and speakers of the device and some are shared below:

Overall the asus 6z speakers are loud but the quality is below average. The voice sounds very shrill and shallow. But the main issue is distortion on low volume from bottom speaker. I don’t know how mods are calling it a good quality speaker when its distorting so much at low volume. There are plenty of scenarios in real life when we need to use low volume. The distortion is massive and its not limited to just my device since i have seen similar posts on the forum.

Apparently, this issue is still persistent even after the most recent update to build 174.

On the brighter side, Asus has acknowledged the issue and promised to fix it with the next FOTA update. Since that not all ZenFone 6Z units are affected, it’s possible that the issue is related to more than just software. But this is just a hunch.

Given how sound issues can be annoying on any smartphone and not just the Asus 6Z, affected users weren’t just satisfied with the promise by the moderators. Upon enquiring when the said FOTA update will arrive, they got the usual “coming soon” timeline.

Looking at how frequent Asus has been pushing updates to the 6Z, though, the wait for the promised update shouldn’t take ages to begin rolling out to affected units. We will inform you when the rollout begins.

The most recent Asus 6Z update rolled out early this month and truth be told, it might take Asus some more time to push the updated FOTA with fixes for sound issues affecting the device. But once again, we’ll keep an eye on the developments and update this post when the update arrives.
