Asus ZenFone 5Z slow charging issue awaits fix even after months

Taiwanese OEM Asus’ newly released ZenFone 6 has been highly appreciated for its out of ordinary flip camera design. Along with that, the company’s latest customized skin ZenUI 6 that the device is layered with is an added benefit and indeed offers users a level up experience.

Coming to the older devices, recently, it was revealed that ZenFone 5Z will be the first company device to get ZenUI 6 along with the stable Android Q update, which is already being beta tested on the device. However, there’s no ETA as to when is Android Q (stable) going to make it to ZenFone 5Z.

While ZenUI 6’s arrival with Android Q on ZenFone 5Z must have elevated user excitement, at the same time, issues that have plagued the device for long and haven’t been fixed till date continue to spoil user experience.

One such problem that we’ve seen ZenFone 5Z users chiming about for months now is slow charging. For a quick refresher, ZenFone 5Z is part of Asus’ 2018 ZenFone 5 lineup of devices. It’s a high-end phone powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset, running Android Pie and ZenUI 5.

The device supports fast charging (or Quick Charge) and comes along with a compatible 18W charger in the box. However, after receiving the January security patch, user have been complaining of fast charge not working or device slow charging despite using the original/boxed adapter and cable.

The official ZenTalk help forum is filled up with reports from ZenFone 5Z users facing the charging issue or reduced charging speed problem. Here’s what some of the complainants have to say:

I have suddenly been experiencing slow charging on my Zenfone 5z after January security patch before i get my Zenfone 5z charged up in just a hour but now it takes more than 2 hr to fully charged. Now it seems like fast charging have been switched off with the update.

Same issue is with my 5z, charging goes upto 1580ma but then the software brings it down to 680ma-720ma. It is surely a software issue. Problem occured immediately after applying January security update via FOTA on 22-02-2019

While slow charging problem was triggered reportedly by January update bearing build number WW-90.10.138.181, users running even the latest patch continue to encounter the same issue.

Coming to what has the company said and done so far, back in March, a ZenTalk forums moderator pitched in informing the affected users that the matter’s being investigated:

The slow charging problem is under investigation.

Following that users kept complaining despite installing the later firmware update (WW- 90.11.162.45). Then in the beginning of April, the same forums moderator stated the company will be improving the slow charge issue.

The slow charge problem, we will improve this problem and also expected to conduct a software update plan in the subsequent system version.

Then a few days later, the moderator asked users to give the newer update bearing build number WW-90.11.162.50 a try.

We’ve improved this problem in the latest system version WW-90.11.162.50.

But nothing changed, as users continued to face the slow charge issue even after updating. Coming to the latest development on the matter, a few days back, the same forums moderator repeated something similar to their earlier statement saying the issue will be improved.
