The Asus-made ROG Phone 5 is every mobile gamer’s dream phone. And for good reason. This device packs the very latest, most capable internals and software features, all geared towards offering the best possible gaming experience.

Along with the beefy internals and external look and feel, the ROG Phone 5 packs an equally robust battery to sustain the power-hungry demands from the target demographic.

At 6000mAh, the ROG Phone 5’s battery is among the biggest ever fitted to a modern flagship device, and with this, users are justified to expect some decent battery life out of their units.

Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case. This, as users of the ROG Phone 5 device are now reporting massive battery drain on their units, the power-hungry features that the flagship packs notwithstanding.

I have similar experience with mine as well. Reviews boasts how great the battery life is but with similar usage to my old P4XL, I find I still have similar battery % left at the end of the day. Granted, I limit my battery to 90% for some longevity but I don’t find the battery life “impressive” for how big it is. Keep in mind the P4XL was a 2k panel compared to 1080p on the ROG.

I agree. Here are some screenshots of charge stats, the battery life has been low, like 5-6 hours with light usage.

According to some savvy users, this could be due to an issue with the ROG Phone 5’s software having a lot of wakelocks which means the device doesn’t ever really go to sleep.

I tried searching on Google.. But don’t find any posts on ROG Phone 5 battery drain. I tried searching Phone idle draining battery as a generic search and found that if the phone has a lot of wakelocks then it tends to drain the battery because phone does not go to sleep mode. And the only way to fix it is by rooting the phone and installing an app which prevents this. πŸ˜”

According to these users, the only way to remedy this issue aside from Asus issuing a proper OTA fix, is to root the device and using a third-party app like Greenify to force-sleep the device.

Alternatively, affected users might want to try this user-suggested workaround as it is a little less intrusive than rooting the device and having to bear the associated risks.

user-suggested workaround

1. Disable: “Phone data always active” on developer settings, search on GOOGLE how to access to developer options.
2. Install latest WW rom from the zip on ASUS website >than .49 and do FULL WIPE.
3. IF YOU DON’T HAVE 100% SIGNAL ON 5G, DISABLE IT, cause don’t work and drain battery.
I’m running build 18.0840.2104.49, by the way.
