The relationship between Android OS and desserts goes back to the year of 2009, when Android 1.5 was released. The Mountain View giant named the new born Android after cupcakes, and the tradition still continues.

However, the naming convention after desserts was actually initiated before Android 1.5 ‘Cupcake’. Readers may find the info rather surprising, but Android 1.1 was internally called ‘Petit four’ – a French style confectionery.

The early code name was Astro Boy, not Astro. The plan was to use code names that were fictional robots, and we were going to do them in alphabetical order. As things went on, plans changed, and those milestones were modified, and at some point we ended up with 1.1 being Petit Four because our PM liked tasty treats. We then went with that, but went back to doing them in alphabetical order.

With time, Google has expanded the domain of the food items and included wafer based confectionery like KitKat (Android 4.4) as well as candies like Lollipop (Android 5.0, 5.1). The upcoming Android Q is effectively the 10th anniversary edition of the OS, thus the rumors about its codename are skyrocketing.

1. Quesadilla

Welcome to the Mexican cuisine! A quesadilla is a special variant of taco, where a tortilla is filled with cheese (primarily). Sometimes meats, beans, vegetables, and spices are also being used.

Technically quesadilla is not a dessert, rather more of a bread/sandwich. Nevertheless, when the co-founder of OnePlus has hinted about this candidate, how can we ignore that?

2. Quinoa

Yes, we are talking about the gluten-free superfood here. After all, Android is getting constant makeovers, so why shouldn’t the codenames get the same treatment?

Don’t you think it’s a blind prediction, as Xiaomi’s Global VP thought the same.

3. Quiche

Let’s get back to the origin and pick a dessert, rater a tart. Quiche, originally part of French cuisine, is now immensely popular across the globe as a party food.

Beside quesadilla, quiche has got plenty of user votes. For example, Android Central’s Andrew Martonik went for the savoury dish. Moreover, you essentially need a pie for preparing quiche, which is kinda inline with Android ecosystem as well!

4. Queen of Puddings

All hail the Queen! Time for some royal British grandeur, what do you think? (No brexit jokes please!)

The Queen of Puddings is a traditional British dessert, which is usually served with jam or custard.

This one is kinda long for a codename (just like Key Lime Pie, which was later discarded). However, Google probably wants the best for us.

5. Qabab

The Asian Android users (including the Indian community) is asking for a codename after a native dish. Qabab (also known as Kebab) is a perfect candidate as this Middle Eastern preparation and its countless variants are popular throughout Asia, and around the world.

Android fans need to wait for few more months to know the actual codename as well as the corresponding statue at Googleplex. Till then, list all the tasty dishes starting with ‘Q’ and shuffle them to predict the name of Android Q.

Have you discovered any secret hint about the codename of the upcoming Android version? Comment below.

Update 1 (August 22)

No fancy dessert names or alphabetical order this time. Google confirms “Android 10” is the official name for the upcoming Android Q.

this next release of Android will simply use the version number and be called Android 10. We think this change helps make release names simpler and more intuitive for our global community.

Not only that, even the brand logo has been given a fresh look.
