Remember those feature-phones where the display always had the time and date? Well, phones have become more capable since then, but they lost this feature. Current phones have millions of pixels and large display that suck on power.

Add the fact that battery tech hasn’t really caught up and you begin to understand why phone makers prefer displays being off when not being used. Today, however, we have power-efficient display panels like OLED so it might make sense to bring back ‘Always On Display’, right?

With EMUI 10, Huawei has introduced this feature to some of its devices with OLED display panel. Current generation flagships like Huawei Mate 30 series have this AOD functionality right out of the box.

However, a bunch of phones did not get this eye-candy feature even after receiving stable EMUI 10 update based on Android 10. The good news is, Huawei will eventually roll out a separate update in this regard.

In a recent announcement by Huawei, the OEM has confirmed that a handful of legacy phones with OLED display will have the colorful Always On Display component by Q1, 2020.

In EMUI 10, the clock style changes according to the time. Our readers should recall that Xiaomi’s MIUI has a similar implementation as well.

Although a specific date is not mentioned yet, it is safe to assume that Huawei will bundle this feature alongside future monthly security updates for the following devices:

Always On Display can be battery intensive if you don’t have the appropriate display tech. To reduce the power consumption, only the smartphones with OLED screen is going to feature AOD. This means all Huawei devices, current or aging, with LCD panels will not get this feature anytime soon.

For supported devices, Huawei’s EMUI 10 operating system comes with a built-in Always-On Display feature. To enable it on supported devices, go to Settings on your phone – Home screen & wallpaperAlways On DisplayTurn on “Always On Display” button.

Most of the phones mentioned above have already gotten EMUI 10 via beta or stable channel. Back in October, we saw Huawei started beta recruitment for Mate 20 X 5G. Huawei P30 and Mate 20 in Europe received stable EMUI 10 (Android 10) update in mid-November.
