New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on January, 2021) follows:
While Sony has not managed to stay in the spotlight for a few years now when it comes to its Android smartphones, the Sony Xperia 5 II is easily one of the best phones the company has released in a while.
The device packs in some of the best hardware from 2020 and comes with Android 10 pre-installed. Therefore, it was all but obvious that Sony would seed the Android 11 update for the Xperia 5 II.
Moreover, an initial report suggested that the company would be rolling out the new Android version for the device right after its launch.
Further, Sony Mobile, on Facebook, put up a post wherein the Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 II were scheduled to bag the update in December. But, sadly, that has not been the case since the device is still running on Android 10.
Later, the company shared a sightly tweaked timeline for the rollout of Android 11 for its eligible phones in which the Xperia 5 II is scheduled to get the update this month, i.e., January.
That said, Sony released Android 11 for the Xperia 1 II in Taiwan followed by regions in Europe as initially planned.
However, it has been over two weeks since the update began rolling out but Sony Xperia 1 II users in some regions are yet to receive the update.
The company has not shared any details yet regarding the sudden pause. But it seems that a few bugs and issues may have led Sony to put a stop to the rollout of Android 11 for the Xperia 1 II.
A fresh report also highlights the possibility that Sony may have delayed the Android 11 update for the Xperia 5 II due to the bugs that were discovered after Xperia 1 II users installed the update.
One such bug that has been bothering users is the one with the AOD (Always on Display) not displaying the correct time or showing app notification icons that aren’t actually in the notification tray.

I have this bug too.. 🙁 (Source)
The bug was first discovered by Xperia 1 II users in Taiwan who installed Android 11 on their devices and soon users in Europe also noticed the issue as highlighted above.
Given all this information, it’s more than likely that the rollout has been halted due to the bugs that tagged along with Android 11.
Having said that, while Sony did not manage to stick to its original Android 11 rollout plan for the Xperia 5 II, there’s still more than half the month left for the company to fix the bugs and push Android 11 for the Xperia 5 II too.
The same goes for the Xperia 1 II which is yet to get the update in some regions such as the U.S. We will keep track of the situation and will post an update once new details emerge.
