New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on January 20, 2021) follows:

Sony started rolling out Android 11 update for the Sony Xperia 1 II back in December, making it the first phone from the company to bag the latest Android version.

However, the rollout appeared to be halted by Sony since users in the U.S. and few other regions did not receive the update even weeks after the initial release.

Moreover, the company failed to seed Android 11 for the Sony Xperia 5 II which was scheduled to get Android 11 alongside the Xperia 1 II.

It was later speculated that the rollout for the two devices may have been paused due to bugs that were noticed after users installed the update.

But to our surprise, Sony started rolling out the new Android version for the original Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 models around a week ago, ahead of its official schedule.

This development indicated that we’d see the Android 11 update go live for the Sony Xperia 5 II soon. As it turns out, the update has indeed started making its way to Xperia 5 II handsets in Europe and Asia.

First spotted by the folks over at XDA, the update bears the software version number 58.1.A.1.178 for the European (XQ-AS52) model and the dual-SIM (XQ-AS72) model sold in Russia and South East Asia.

The SoftBank Japan-exclusive single SIM model (A002SO) is also getting the update, albeit with a different software version — 58.1.D.0.331.

As for what all the update brings, we haven’t managed to get our hands on a complete changelog for the update yet.

Of course, users can expect to see most, if not all, new features that Google introduced with Android 11. Since Sony does not add its own skin over Android, there may be only a handful of Sony-exclusive changes.

Now that the update has been released to users in Europe and Asia, it’s likely that we’ll see the company start seeding the update in other regions as well in the following weeks.

In the meantime, we’d suggest keeping an eye out on our dedicated tracker to know when Sony releases the update for the Xperia 5 II or any other eligible device for that matter.
