New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on January 04, 2021) follows:

Xiaomi announced MIUI 12 to its global audience in May 2020. But the Redmi Note 8 had to wait until late October to bag the same update, at least for those on the global variant.

Even after the long wait, Xiaomi was still unable to fully equip the Redmi Note 8 MIUI 12 update with all features from the accompanying Android 10 OS.

Things got worse when, shortly after rolling out the global MIUI 12 update, some device owners started reporting issues with downloading the firmware.

As a result, Xiaomi was forced to rollback the buggy MIUI 12 update and in its place release an older MIUI 11 firmware to those affected.

This came after a poll that indeed revealed not many had switched to the new skin.

A couple or so weeks later, Xiaomi, through various comments by forum moderators, promised to roll out a patched-up MIUI 12 update to the Redmi Note 8 in early January 2021, but with no specific date.

And indeed, as of this writing, an updated MIUI 12 firmware meant for the global Redmi Note 8 has just surfaced online, suggesting that the OTA rollout is imminent, if not ongoing already.

Arriving as version 12.0.3.0.QCOMIXM, the update, as expected, also tags along the newer Android 10 OS, up from the pre-installed Android Pie. FYI, the Note 8 is also in line for MIUI 12.5 update based on Android 11.

The update bundles the latest January 2021 security patch:

Updated Android Security Patch to January 2021. Increased system security.

While we are yet to see an official announcement, we do have the link to grab the firmware for manual installation right below, but take this route at your own risk.

Also on the receiving end of a similar MIUI 12 update is the Redmi Note 5, a device that remains unique in the Redmi Note series thanks to having received two major Android OS updates, unlike any other.

This is about to change, though, as the Redmi Note 8 series is reportedly set to bag Android 11 update, the second major OS upgrade. That said, the Note 5 is receiving MIUI 12 as version 12.0.2.0.PEIMIXM.

Below is a summary of the changes to expect:

[System]
– Optimization: Full screen gestures are now ignored on the Lock screen alarm page
[System animations]
– Optimization: Animations in selected scenes

[Control center]
– New: Swipe down from the upper left corner to open Notification shade and from the upper right corner to open Control center

Update (January 05)

10:10 am IST: Xiaomi has published an official announcement regarding the Redmi Note 8 MIUI 12 update, adding that this rollout is staged and thus available for limited users.

We also got a screenshot of the update, suggesting that it could be targeted to Note 8 variants already on the buggy MIUI 12 update. This also means those on V11.0.12.0 still have to wait.
