Original story (published on July 22, 2020) follows:
Google’s Pixel Buds 2 is one of the best truly wireless solutions that are currently available. As expected, it brings some improvements and enhancements over the OG Pixel Buds that released back in 2017.
Most brands and companies are hopping on the TWS bandwagon to cover the problem created by smartphone OEMs by removing the trusted 3.5mm jack. While TWS is the future, there’s no denying that the audio experience is still far off from their wired counterparts.
Earlier, we reported that the Google Pixel Buds were having connectivity and stability issues. Fortunately, Google didn’t take too long to begin working on a fix. Shortly, the company did roll out an update to address some of the problems.
But like most other Bluetooth devices, audio connectivity issues seem to pop-up out of nowhere. Speaking of which, Google Pixel Buds 2 users are no strangers to such problems.
Recently, many users began reporting about audio cutouts while listening to media on the Pixel Buds 2. This is a similar issue that Pixel Buds owners have previously brought to light.
Most of these reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) revolve around the audio dropouts that happen in intervals. Many users are frustrated that the audio connection is not stable. According to their reports, the audio dropouts occur every few minutes.
Further, some even report about audio delays while watching videos even after receiving the 296 software update.
Unpairing buds, rebooting phone. Trying different videos and recalling people. Issues seem to come and go randomly. But people when I call say it’s tinny with a low level echo
A user has also reported that the audio cutouts only occur when moving outdoors.
As above, my Buds work perfectly inside with my 4XL but as soon as I go outside it’s as though they forget how to function and are constantly cutting in and out. It’s both ears and at random. Turning my head is enough for them to cut out.
Even holding my phone in front of my face to remove obstructions it still cuts in and out.(Source)
Thankfully, Google has not turned a blind eye to the audio connectivity issues that users are facing. In response to these reports, a Product expert on Google support made the following statement:
I’ve just in the past day or two come across a few others mentioning audio problems occurring at this oddly-specific 1:50 interval. I know Google is working on a big update for next month which should address some of the connectivity/audio issues which have been reported so far, but I don’t know for sure if it’ll cover this particular incarnation of the problem.
According to the Product expert, Google is already working on a big update that should fix some of the issues. However, it’s not yet certain whether the update will address the audio cutouts at specific intervals.
It appears that users will have to wait for the update to arrive in August and hope for the best. As usual, we will continue to track the situation and will post an update when new information arises.
Update 1 (September 18)
Google Pixel Buds 2 users who are dealing with the audio cutting out every 1 minute 50 seconds will be pleased to know that the company is rolling out an update that addresses the issue. According to Google, the firmware v552 update will fix the problem for good.
