Honor Play VoWifi (WiFi calling) support finally rolling out with March security patch

After Voice over LTE, popularly abbreviated as VoLTE, VoWiFi seems to be the next frontier in the quest to deliver better audio call quality. We have already seen phone makers, especially Chinese OEMs, push out updates to enable this feature on many supported devices, especially for the Indian market.

Realme and Honor have been on the forefront in this with many Realme devices getting this feature enabled in various updates over the past few months. Today, Huawei is adding the Honor play to VoWiFi list of supported devices.

Previous reports indicated that the Honor play would get support for this feature sometime this month. In particular, the update was scheduled to roll out in the second week of April. More on that story here.

Well, true to the company’s word, the Honor Play is bagging an update that is enabling VoWiFi. The update which also packs the March 2020 Android security patch update weighs in at a rather sizeable 791 MB and is still based on Android 9 Pie.

This is a welcome move seeing as the Honor Play was left out in the list of devices from Honor and Huawei that would get updated to Android 10. To see a device that, for all intents and purposes, has been discontinued, getting new tricks, is a plus on Huawei’s side.

With this update, the Honor Play joins the list of other Huawei and Honor devices that have since been updated to enable and support Voice over WiFi in supported regions and carriers.

Some of the other devices from the Chinese tech giant include; Honor 9 Lite, Honor 20i, Honor 10 Lite, Honor 9X, Honor 8X among others.

Recently, Honor and Huawei announced that the feature was still under development for its devices and the company urged users to be patient as the updates are prepared and rolled out. You can read more about that here.

We can only hope that more OEMs follow Huawei’s lead and update their devices to support this feature that is increasingly becoming the norm in many regions across the globe.
