Jailbreaking has been seen as the iOS equivalent of rooting. This allows users to have access to, and even modify iOS system functions and this opens up a whole lot of customization and system tweaking.

One of the most common ways iOS users have been using to jailbreak their Apple devices is checkra1n. This tool currently supports a rather rich assortment of iOS devices and is regularly updated by the developer.

Checkra1n is getting updated to a new version, this time with build number 0.9.8.1. This build brings with it a bunch of new improvements and under-the-hood enhancements.

Perhaps one of the most notable feature in this build is the addition of support for Project SandCastle by CorelliumHQ.

What is Project Sandcastle you ask? Well, it is probably the most interesting tweak in recent mobile history. Project Sandcastle allows users with some supported iOS devices to run Android on their phones. This tweak requires jailbreaking.

Jailbreaks like Checkra1n can make iPhones less secure, as it removes “sandboxing,” which prevents malicious code from one app stealing data from another, among other security protections. It’s therefore worth considering what device, if any, you choose to install this on.

Checkra1n 0.9.8.1 is a Beta build and as such, should probably not be installed on a primary device as there still are some bugs that need to be worked on. Below is a detailed changelog for this build.

Other changes
-Support Project Sandcastle
Known issues
-The Apple TV 4K will produce a -20 error, even on a successful jailbreak Other known issues are available on our issue tracker.
Known issues
-The exploit may not work as reliably on some devices, such as the Raspberry Pi Zero and Raspberry Pi 3.
-When trying to jailbreak multiple devices, only the first attempt will succeed. Workaround: relaunch checkra1n after every jailbreak attempt.

This checkra1n 0.9.8.1 beta is only available for macOS and Linux. The developer adds that work is ongoing to support Windows, which will be added in a later release.
