New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on Januay 24, 2020) follows:

Are you looking forward to the Galaxy S8 One UI 2.0 update? Or is it the prospects of receiving the Android 10-based update on your Galaxy Note 8 that is giving you a reason to keep hanging onto these 2017 beauties?

The question of whether the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 will be upgraded to Android 10 isn’t new whatsoever. Matter of fact, now that Samsung has been pushing the stable One UI 2.0 update to various devices, interest in the new OS from Note 8 and S8 owners has increased further.

As a result, some concerned owners of the device have been asking Samsung support for clarification on this subject – a subject that keeps popping up each and every year.

Now, hold up! Before you even begin getting any ideas, we all know that Samsung rolls out only two major OS updates to its premium phones. Lately, this has also been the case for the midrange and budget handsets.

One would think that the price gap between the premium and budget phones should also be reflected in the way software updates are handled. But Samsung takes none of that, which is quite unfortunate, especially for current owners of Galaxy Note 8 and S8 handsets.

These two came preinstalled with Nougat and currently run on Pie. By all means, they are more powerful than the Google Pixel and equally powerful as the Pixel 2 – a set of devices that are currently running Android 10.

For further perspective, the equally powerful OnePlus 5 and 5T – both powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 found in U.S. variants of the Galaxy Note 8 and S8 – are also on course to receive Android 10, their third major OS upgrade.

So, why isn’t Samsung considering the Galaxy S8 One UI 2.0 update? What about the Galaxy Note 8 that also boasts equally capable hardware? Well, once again, we have our answer in the fact that Samsung only rolls out two OS upgrades to its devices.

It remains to be seen when Samsung will follow in the footsteps of Google and OnePlus and begin rolling out three major OS updates, at least to flagship phones like the Galaxy Note 8, S8 and S8+.

For now, though, it seems unlikely that Samsung will cave in to the demands of Note 8 and S8 owners for the release of Android 10. But if things change at some point, we will be happy to bring you updates on the same as and when we get them.

The best Galaxy S8 owners can get, at least for now, is the latest January 2020 security patch arriving as version G950FXXS6DTA1 on the S8 and G955FXXS6DTA1 on the S8+. It’s pretty heavy for a mere patch, so be sure to grab it for it may also contain bug fixes and improvements.

Update 1 (February 25, 2020)

Yet another controversial statement about the Galaxy S8 One UI 2.0 update prospects has popped up, this time slating the release date at Q2 2020. See the full details here.

Update 2 (February 27, 2020)

According to SamMobile, Samsung confirmed to them that the Galaxy Note 8 and S8 duo will not be upgraded to Android 10. This is because the devices have already received two OS upgrades that Samsung promises for its phones.

We knew this was likely to be the case, but Samsung representatives kept on giving out contradicting statements on the matter. With this, at least things should be a little clearer – that going forward, the Note 8 and S8 devices will only receive security updates.
