Android 10 was launched back in September 2019. This means that theOS is now 5 months old and almost halfway through its life cycle. Many eligible devices have been updated by now but Xperia XZ1 users are a worried lot.
Everyone from Samsung, OnePlus, Realme, Xiaomi among many others have already updated most of their flagships from the past two years to the latest version of Android.
A group of Sony’s XPERIA XZ1 users, however, are not ready to swallow the bitter pill, face the truth that their device is not in line for an update to Android 10.
According to Sony in its list of devices that are eligible for an update to the new version of Android, the XZ1 does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for the update.
These users have resorted to signing a petition on Change.org in an attempt to compel Sony to develop an Android 10 firmware for the device.
In the past, we have seen phone users turn to sign petitions to compel manufacturers to update their devices. Most recently we saw Huawei Nova 3i users and Honor Play users resort to these measures. Honor Play users would even settle for Huawei unlocking their bootloader.
In this Android ecosystem, it is a tradition that a flagship device is updated to at least one major OS update but most do it for two updates. This is in line with the stats that an average Android user owns his phone for 2 years.
The Sony Xperia XZ1 was launched back in 2017, running Android 8 Oreo at the time. It has since been updated to Android 9 Pie where it currently stands.
It is still unclear whether Sony will oblige and update this device to Android 10 as per the wishes of the 1,342 petitioners at the time of writing.
