[Update: Issue persists] Xiaomi Redmi 9 MIUI 12 update to further optimize gyroscope sensor performance

Xiaomi has been steadily rolling out MIUI 12 to eligible devices for several months now and with the recent completion of batch 2 of the rollout, it is safe to say that the company is well on track to completing this deployment.

Even with this, there are a number of eligible devices that haven’t bagged this much-awaited update. You can check out our dedicated MIUI 12 tracker for more on the state of the rollout of this custom Android skin.

One such device is the Redmi 9 in a few regions like India. Launched back in June 2020, the device runs on Mediatek’s Helio G80, at least for the Chinese and Global variants. It launched with Android 10 with the company’s MIUI 11 and remains eligible for an update to MIUI 12.

We saw the Chinese Redmi 9 bag an update to MIUI 12 back in late July. However, that was short-lived as the update was quickly pulled, only to be re-released several weeks later.

Even then, there are still a few glaring issues with this update to MIUI 12. See, the Redmi 9 has had a persistent bug that’s affected the device’s gyroscope sensor for a while now. In a MIUI Weekly Bug Report, the company has listed a number of known issues for its devices and below is an excerpt from that.

Redmi 9 Top issue:
1. Gyroscope on Redmi 9 is not working in versions V11.0.2.0.QJCINXM, V11.0.3.0.QJCIDXM
– Need continuous optimization the virtual gyroscope has a delay and can only be optimized as much as possible.
– The optimization effect of the IN version is not good, and the feedback ratio is high. Continue to analyze.

There is already a newer version V11.0.4.0.QJCINXM for India. This build rolled out over the above-mentioned V11.0.2.0.QJCINXM. At the time of writing, it is unclear if the build brought any further optimization to the said devices.

Xiaomi is promising to continue optimizing the performance of the devices gyroscope in the MIUI 12 update.

It is reassuring to see Xiaomi commit to continuously updating and optimizing the gyroscope sensor on this device. We can only hope for the same level of commitment to bettering the user experience from other OEMs.

18:46 pm (IST): Sadly, it seems like there is no fix in sight months after reports of the issue began to flow in. There is still a strong influx of complaints and mods are still only hoping for a future fix.
