Sony Xperia 5 arrived in September 2019 as a compact variant of the Xperia 1 released earlier in the year. The two have a lot in common, with their sizes the major notable difference.
The fact that they have the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset has played in favor of Sony. The company rolls out nearly identical firmware updates to the two devices, which usually means OTA download notifications arrive at the same time on both handsets.
This was the case when Android 10 arrived in early December 2019. The OTA hit both devices as software version 55.1.A.0.748, but from the look of things, it seems some people never got the update.
If you are among them and happen to reside in the UK or Europe at large, Sony is rolling out the stable Android 10 update to both Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 handsets. This time around, the OTA is arriving as software version 55.1.A.3.49.
The initial Android 10 update for both devices bundled November patches, but the incoming version has the latest January patches included. FYI, those who were on Android 10 with November patches will also receive a small update to version 55.1.A.3.49 with January patches.
The firmware is already discoverable on XperiaCheck, so it should be a matter of time before the OTA hits your unit.
January patches for Xperia 10 and 10 Plus
Unlike Xperia 5 and Xperia 1, the update to Android 10 for those using the midrange Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus is still nowhere to be seen. As of this writing, the best owners of the duo can get is the latest January 2020 security patches.
Arriving as version 53.0.A.14.47 and weighing in at 310.5MB, the OTA is still based on Android Pie. This, however, shouldn’t surprise considering the duo didn’t even make the cut when Sony’s Android 10 roadmap details surfaced.
