Apple CEO Tim Cook sees future in AR; stresses investment in technology for preventive healthcare

Apple, under its CEO Tim Cook, is pretty serious about people’s healthcare. Their Apple Watch for instance. While it is a solid piece of modern engineering, the many years of development and its incorporation of sensors have made it an indispensable health companion gadget. No wonder many sports enthusiasts love it.

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook is in Ireland this week to receive an award in recognition of Apple’s 40-year history in the country. At an event in Dublin, the CEO had a sit down to talk about tech development in the next few years.

As reported by Silicon Republic, Cook it clear that he sees augmented reality as the future, calling it the “next big thing.”

“I’m excited about AR,” Cook said. “My view is it’s the next big thing, and it will pervade our entire lives. Yesterday, I visited a development company called War Ducks in Dublin – 15 people and they’re staffing up and using AR for games. You can imagine, for games, it’s incredible but even for our discussion here. You and I might be talking about an article and using AR we can pull it up, and can both be looking at the same thing at the same time.”

Cook also talked about his thought on Augmented reality and how some people believe it might lead to isolation. He said, “I think it’s something that doesn’t isolate people. We can use it to enhance our discussion, not substitute it for human connection, which I’ve always deeply worried about in some of the other technologies,”

Tim also expressed his excitement about the role of tech in healthcare. He went on to add that the intersection between tech and healthcare is one that is yet to be properly explored, despite there bring a lot of opportunities.

“I think you can take that simple idea of having preventive things and find many more areas where technology intersects healthcare, and I think all of our lives would probably be better off for it,” said Cook.

Tim Cook also believes that the cost of healthcare can be fundamentally taken down if the technology is more widely adopted. He also hinted towards Apple being a key player in the sector going forward.

“Most of the money in healthcare goes to the cases that weren’t identified early enough. It will take some time but things that we are doing now – that I’m not going to talk about today – those give me a lot of cause for hope.”

Cook has previously been quoted saying that Apple’s “greatest contribution” to mankind will be health-related. This is in line with his often public view on the importance of preventative healthcare and the role of Apple, and technology in achieving this.

It will be interesting to see what Apple comes up with in line with this new push by the CEO.
