New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on January 8, 2020) follows:
Android TV boxes don’t get the same attention as their smartphone counterparts. The NVIDIA Shield TVs that deservedly dominate this tiny market thanks to their unique abilities such as 4K content and video game streaming don’t come on the cheap.
Matter of fact, getting hold of an NVIDIA Shield TV in some markets is an extreme sport. As an alternative, the best and most affordable Android TV box that most people can get their hands on is the Xiaomi Mi Box S.
Having used one, I can admit the Mi Box S is a great piece of hardware for the money. It has similar internal hardware as its predecessor but with a Google Assistant-controlled voice remote for playing your favorite TV shows and movies handsfree.
The Mi Box S arrived in October 2018 and even though Android Pie was available, a good number of devices released at the time had Android Oreo running the show out of the box. The Mi Box S was never going to be an exception, but with a promise of Android Pie TV update at some point.
Fast-forward to November 2019 and the Mi Box S Android Pie beta arrived, the first installation. A couple of weeks later, the second beta update was released with bug fixes and optimizations. About a month ago, the Mi Box S picked up its Pie beta 3 update.
Today, the Android TV box is now receiving the stable Android Pie update as an OTA. The update weighs in at 624.3MB, the same size as the previous Pie beta 3 update.
Matter of fact, the stable Mi Box S Android Pie update has the same build number 2231 as the previous Pie beta 3 (via @namangoyal). Granted, those who had already installed this version need to do nothing.
What Xiaomi has done is simply to promote the Pie beta 3 into a stable build, which is now rolling out to those who still had Android Oreo on their Mi Box S set-top boxes over the air.
In addition to Pie, the Mi Box S update also installs a newer Android security patch level dated November 5. Although it’s not the latest version available, few may even notice while busy checking out the new Pie-based features.
If you can’t wait for the OTA notification to arrive, you can grab the download file from the link below and install the update on your Mi Box S right now.
