If you are in the market for the 2015 version of the Shield TV today, well, NVIDIA discontinued it last year for obvious reasons. That isn’t to say the OG Shield TV is dead and gone. Matter of fact, NVIDIA recently pushed the second hotfix to the device alongside the 2017 model.
Sure, the 2019 Shield TVs bring the same functionality as their predecessors, but you are getting a much better remote, an updated Tegra X1+ chipset that delivers snappier performance alongside support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
Software issues and bugs are bound to pop up from time to time, which is why companies have come up with beta-testing programs to iron out any major kinks in the software before making the update available to everyone.
NVIDIA runs one of these programs for its Shield TVs all the way from 2015 to 2019 and it calls them HotFix updates. Since these hotfix updates are basically unfinished, they are prone to bugs and issues here and there.
One such bug that has been affecting Shield TV 2019 models registered into the HotFix process is the installation of the Disney+ app. This issue has been here for a while and in fact, it was addressed in the second hotfix update.
But apparently, someone is having the same Shield TV Disney+ issues when trying to install the app following the latest third hotfix, which rolled out early this week.
Well, according to NVIDIA, the HotFix images have a fair share of known issues and one of them is installing the Disney+ app. Apparently, you must first install the Disney+ app before switching to this HotFix image, otherwise, you won’t be able to install it.
HotFix images are not fully certified. The negative side effect is that you won’t be able to install Disney+ if you haven’t installed it yet or do a Factory reset on this image. Source
But it’s possible to install the Disney+ app on the second hotfix update, no? Sure it is, though it’s because this particular hotfix image was certified to let Shield TV 2019 owners install the Disney+ app straight from the Play Store.
As for the third hotfix image, it’s not certified hence the latest Shield TV Disney+ issues. Of course, the stable version that’ll bring the changes in the third hotfix update will be certified, so installing Disney+ app won’t be an issue anymore.
This is because we certified the second iteration of this HotFix with google to let people download Disney+. The third iteration of this HotFix has not been certified so Disney+ cant be downloaded.

So, if you would like to use Disney+ on a Shield TV 2019 unit registered into the HotFix process, you must ensure the app is installed first before updating the Shield to the third hotfix. This way, the app will still be on your device after the update and hence no need to install it again.
