Smartphone makers like Samsung introduced the concept of system-wide dark mode with their custom skins on Android 9.0 Pie. This feature soon gained popularity and it became one of the most requested features for Android 10.

Fortunately, Google listened to Android users and offered this useful feature in Android 10. The availability of a system-wide dark mode on stock Android was praised by most smartphone users.

In fact, soon after Google, many app developers started offering a dark theme to their native apps as well.

Unfortunately, there was still a problem that Google couldn’t tackle with the system-wide dark mode on Android 10. Well, the issue we are talking about is the ability to schedule dark mode based on a user’s preference.

It is worth noting that dark mode scheduling was available on some of the beta versions of Android 10. That said, this feature couldn’t make it to the stable versions of Android 10. Google itself stated that this feature was buggy and it suddenly restarted applications.

Recently, an issue named as “Scheduling Night Mode on Android Q final release” on Google Issue Tracker has been marked fixed by a googler. This googler stated that

“The issue reported here has been fixed and it will become available in a future Android release.”

As a result, we can expect the upcoming Android 11 to come with dark mode scheduling.

The primary reason why this feature couldn’t be added to the stable release of Android 10 was that most applications had to completely redraw their interface after the new theme was applied.

Furthermore, once an app redraws its interface everything like scrolling position and the entered text gets lost. Users have encountered similar app restarting issues with Android 10’s power-saving mode.
