To many, Asus is synonymous with PCs. But that is not the only thing that the OEM is good at. Computer and networking equipment aside, their ZenFone series is critically acclaimed. These Android-based phones often strike a rather sweet price-feature ratio.
The company is no stranger in delivering periodic software updates, as they recently rolled out stable Android 10 for ZenFone 6. Two more phones are getting security updates, so let’s take a look.
Asus ZenFone 4 Pro
One of ASUS’s devices available today is the Zenfone 4 Pro. The device was first unveiled back in August 2017. A flagship at the time, it spotted the then top of the range Snapdragon 835. It featured a 5.5″ AMOLED display, fueled by a decent 3,600 mAh battery.
The update that is now available for the ZenFone 4 Pro (ZS551KL) brings the software version to 15.0410.1911.117. The official release date is December 3. The update’s changelog is as follows:
Release Note
1. Google security patch update
2. Modify Netherlands Vodafone APN setting(Source)
While the changelog does indicate that the update brings with it a new security patch update, it does not mention the exact month.
The last time we saw the Zenfone 4 Pro get an update was back in early September, getting the August patch. Other models from the same family, like ZenFone 4 & ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro got the September security update later that month.
Asus ZenFone 5
Also getting updated is the ZenFone 5. The phone was announced February 2018 and spots rather modest mid-range internals. It is powered by the Snapdragon 636 chipset, spots a 3,300 mAh battery and starts at 64 GB of internal storage.
The ZenFone 5 (ZE620KL) is getting an update that bumps the software version to 16.0615.1912.115. The software starts getting rolled out on December 4 and the following is the changelog:
Release Note
-Update Google security patch
-Fixed APN editing issue
-Fixed SBC BT glitching issue in developer option
-Fix quit setting swiping issue in multiple windows
-Optimized system stability(Source)
Like the previous, it does not explicitly mention which month the update is for. In the past, the ZenFone 5Z, Zenfone 5’s beefier cousin has been getting much of the love. It received the October update and even the stable version of Android 10.
At the time of writing, download links to these updates are not available yet. Also, if history is anything to go by, these should be November patch, but we are not sure.
These are OTA updates and as such, it is going to be rolled out in phases. You can tap on “System updates” in Settings > System to check if there is new firmware available. If it is not, be patient.
For a long time, one of the biggest advantages of iOS over Android has been the issue of updates. Once Apple pushes out an update, all compatible iPhones get the update, be they security patches or entire firmware upgrades.
For Android, not so much. We have to deal with a heavily fragmented ecosystem. To see relatively obscure phone makers like Asus manage to push out updates only goes to show how mature the Android ecosystem has become.
