New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Xiaomi’s Redmi line of smartphones strikes a rather sweet balance between price, performance, and features. The Redmi 8 and the Redmi 8A are no different. The former comes with a 6.22-inch HD+ IPS display. It has a screen resolution of 1520×720 pixels.

In general, the Redmi 8 has a great design and build quality, has phenomenal battery life and surprisingly sports a USB-C port at an entry-level price. Redmi 8A, on the other hand, has a big display and a good capacity battery with fast-charge support that makes it a decent option in the budget smartphone segment.

Recently, we saw these two devices get the October 2019 security update in Europe. This was a generic Android patch that updated Android security patch level to October 2019 and increased system security.

That update was purely incremental in nature and did not add anything new to the device. But all that was a precursor to the MIUI 11 update. Well yes! Both Redmi 8A and Redmi 8 are now receiving the stable MIUI 11 update (based on Android Pie though) in India.

We still don’t know when this device duo will receive Android 10 update, but the jump from MIUI 10 to MIUI 11 looks pretty swift. The security patch level is still on October though, not November like a handful of devices out there.

Update (November 19)

Xiaomi apparently pulled the initial MIUI 11 build for Redmi 8. A new update with the same October patch is rolling in India. Redmi 8A seems unaffected. Details here.
