New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on October 14, 2019) follows:

HMD Global already gave us the official Nokia Android 10 update roadmap and in fact, the rollout is already ongoing for those using the Nokia 8.1.

The update started rolling out last week, making the Nokia 8.1 not only the first Nokia device to get the stable Android 10, but also the first in the Snapdragon 700 series to do so.

For the uninitiated, the Nokia 8.1 is the only HMD smartphone that participated in the Android Q beta testing program. Naturally, it was always going to be the first to get the stable version ahead of the rest.

Speaking of the rest, next in line to receive the official Nokia Android 10 update will be the Nokia 9 PureView and Nokia 7.1. These two will be updated to the new OS before the end of Q4 2019, but those using the latter can already get their hands on the internal build ahead of official availability.

Thanks to famous modder Hikari Calyx, owners of the Nokia 7.1 can now download and install an unstable version of Android 10 to the device. The developer says an unlocked bootloader is needed for this to work, especially since you may need to roll back to the previous version.

Requirements: You’d better have bootloader unlocked, as we can’t guarantee if anything wrong could happen – you’ll need unlocked bootloader to rollback your phone.

Besides the Nokia 7.1, the developer has also picked up Android 10 internal builds for the Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 6.1 Plus. Looking at the official Nokia Android 10 update roadmap, these two are scheduled to receive the new OS somewhere in late Q4 2019 or early Q1 2020.

Given that the company has already commenced internal tests, the former release date looks more likely than the latter. But if you can’t wait this long, you can already grab the current Android 10 build for your respective device and install it manually.

Once again, these are internal test builds that are still nowhere near the final version. Granted, you should come across several bugs and inconsistent performances here and there.

Besides having an unlocked bootloader, one other condition of installing these Android 10 internal builds on your eligible Nokia device is that you must be using the most recent stable update that brought October security patches.

Although not a condition, it is also worth noting that these test builds are only meant for savvy users who know their way around flashing ROMs on Android phones and the impacts of such a move.

If you are treading on familiar grounds, head over to the respective XDA pages below for more instructions on how to install Android 10 on your Nokia 6.1, Nokia 6.1 Plus or Nokia 7.1.

Once you have installed these builds, you might as well want to forget about OTA updates since they can’t be guaranteed.

Update (October 29)

Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer of HMD Global, recently tweeted about the progress of Android 10 rollout process. According to him, Nokia is planning to take the pole position in the race of providing the next major Android update for Snapdragon 636 platform.

Matter of fact, both Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 7.1 are based on SD636 SoC. Looks like the stable update release is pretty close!
