Providing regular software updates for legacy phones is apparently a hectic job for phone manufacturers, although the situation is gradually improving. Google has set a solid example of releasing major Android revisions for the whole Pixel lineup on the same day.
The good news is, other OEMs are catching up quickly.
Asus, the famous Taiwanese PC maker is not a new name in smartphone industry. They collaborated with Google to build the Nexus 7 tablets. Their current flagship, i.e. ZenFone 6 (sold as Asus 6z in India), is entitled for Android 10 update.
Well, Asus is also caring about the legacy top end phone – ZenFone 5Z. The Snapdragon 845 powered beast got August security patch at the beginning of September. We also reported about a recent (leaked) beta of Android 10 based ZenUI 6 for the phone, which is limited to a small group of testers at this moment.
Stop right there, cause the current ZenUI 6 build is far from being a stable one. Regular users need to stick with Pie based ZenUI 5 for a while, and Asus also has a little surprise for them.
The October security patch is now live for ZenFone 5Z, and the OTA is reportedly rolling out across the globe. The size of the incremental package is less than 100 MB, so don’t expect any kind of major new feature inside.
Changelog:
1. Update security patch to 2019-10
2. Update apn table to v258
As you can see, the new update bumps the internal version number from 90.11.162.88 to 90.11.162.111. The changelog refers to revising APN table, which should be beneficial for end users who have difficulties to set the APNs manually.
We are not sure the exact timeline of ZenUI 6/Android 10 update rollout for Asus ZenFone 5Z, but consider this as a preparatory step towards the big jump. The full OTA package can be downloaded from the following link, so that our readers can skip the long waiting queue.
