Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Compact & XZ2 Premium getting surprising October patch, Android 10 nowhere to be seen

Sony rarely features in talks about leading smartphone vendors in the world because it has such a tiny market share that isn’t worth mentioning in the same lines as Samsung and Huawei, the first and second smartphone OEMs in the world, respectively.

Still, the Japanese company hasn’t given up and recently unveiled the Xperia 5 and swiftly followed it with its first software update. The Xperia 5 is a slightly more compact variant of the Xperia 1 that came out in February this year but equally powerful in terms of performance and photography.

While the attention has obviously shifted to the newest kids on the block, Sony hasn’t completely forgotten about its older devices. The company regularly rolls out software updates to the likes of Xperia XZ3, Xperia XZ2, and even Xperia XZ1 and usually does so on time.

For some reason, though, the September security update took longer than usual to arrive on the Xperia XZ2, Xperia XZ2 Compact, and Xperia XZ2 Premium. The update started rolling out last week as version 52.0.A.10.6 for all three units.

A week later, the same trio of phones is receiving yet another software update. No, this has nothing to do with Android 10 even though we expect the Xperia XZ2 series to receive the new OS, but the incoming OTA tags along the latest October security patches.

The new update is arriving as software version 52.0.A.11.3 and weighs in at 104MB. Some Xperia XZ2 users who had not received the previous September update are experiencing an interesting scenario where the two updates are arriving in quick succession.

Considering that Sony updated the Xperia XZ2 only a week ago, some would have quickly mistaken the incoming October update for the much-awaited Android 10 OS upgrade. But the wait is still on.

For how long the wait will continue is still unknown, but knowing Sony’s track record with Android OS updates coupled with the existing Android 10 building guide for the Xperia XZ2 phones, the trio should begin receiving the new OS in the coming weeks, probably before the end of Q4 2019.
