New Razer Phone Android Pie 9.0 update causes camera crashes

Some of us live for software updates. The thrill that comes with getting a new software update, even the smallest of them all, is something else. However, not always do we end up with the best of experiences with each and every new software that we receive on our beloved smartphones.

Such has been the long-standing case for the Razer Phone, especially with major OS upgrades. The gaming-centric device came out in November 2017 with Android 7.1.1 Nougat running the show out of the box.

The phone was updated to Android Oreo in mid-April 2018, but a week or so into its rollout, the update was halted due to bugs related to SIM detection and later resumed rolling out three weeks later.

Fast forward to 2019 and it seems Razer hasn’t learned a thing from its past experiences with software updates. The Razer Phone started receiving its second major OS upgrade to Android Pie in mid-August but the rollout was quickly halted due to a Game Booster bug.

Over a month later, Razer started rolling out another Android Pie build to the Razer Phone, this time with the Game Booster bug fully addressed. Great job fixing the bug, Razer.

But wait, this same update, apparently, has introduced a bunch of other bugs like Chrome not working, issues with Opera, and the camera app keeps crashing, just to name but a few.

After updating the razer phone 1, my chrome doesn’t work, my opera doesn’t work, my Camera doesn’t work as in they all crash when opened. Does anyone have any similar experiences and hopefully solutions.

So I recently updated to Android 9 pie and now the camera app doesn’t work. Apps that use the camera like Snapchat still work though.

I also have that issue and have tried clearing cache and storage, disabling and re-enabling, rebooting the app and the phone… It’s kind of a joke. Really disappointed in how poor software support for this device has been.

Usually, clearing the camera app cache/data would fix such a problem, but not even that does so as evidenced above. However, it seems someone found a workaround that temporarily addresses the issue.

While turning off DND might not be the best solution for some, it seems to be the only workaround at your disposal at the moment. On the brighter side, Razer has acknowledged the camera crashing issue after the latest Razer Phone Pie update and hopes to find a fix soon.

As some of you know there’s an issue with the latest pie update that results in the do not disturb function causing the camera to force close. For the time being please just switch off do not disturb to use the camera. I’ve reported it to Razer so hopefully, we’ll see a fix soon.

How soon the fix will be released remains to be seen, but considering the company has acknowledged the issue, it shouldn’t take them ages to fix it. But of course, we all know software development isn’t a walk in the park, so anything is possible here.
