New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on September 10, 2019) follows:
Gaming smartphones are actually a thing today. Sure, the $1000 phones of this world like Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S10, iPhone XS, and even some slightly cheaper phones like OnePlus 7 Pro, Asus ZenFone 6, Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro, and many others do a great job at mobile gaming.
However, there is a new crop of smartphones that are tailored to meet the needs of hardcore gamers on the go. One of the latest to arrive is Asus ROG Phone 2 announced in July 2019 and is now available in select markets globally alongside a list of ROG Phone 2 games to be excited about.
For many years, some of the best gaming titles were only accessible through consoles and PCs, but with phones getting powerful every year, smartphone gaming is predicted to account for over $120 billion of the video gaming revenue by 2025.
Devices like the ROG Phone II and its predecessor, the Razer Phone family, Xiaomi’s Black Shark series, and the Nubia RED Magic family of phones, among others, are taking over the smartphone gaming industry by offering gaming-specific features like liquid cooling systems.
We’ve also seen other features like a built-in fan for lowering temperatures during extreme gaming, pressure-sensitive buttons and display screen, and even overlocked processors just so as to provide users with fluid, next-level gaming experiences.
However, a feature that was initially introduced on gaming smartphones and is now being popularized by mainstream smartphones is the bumped-up display refresh rate of 90Hz and 120Hz.
OnePlus 7 Pro, for instance, has the former refresh rate on its AMOLED panel and it’s rumored that Google Pixel 4 will also get a similar refresh rate on both the standard and XL variants. For those who have been following the ROG Phone 2, you’ll know that it comes with a 120Hz refresh rate.
While such refresh rates mean you get a buttery smooth screen, it requires that app developers to update their apps to work on such screens, otherwise, you’ll be stuck with apps tailored to work on a slower refresh rate.
In the case of Asus, the company has compiled a list of ROG Phone 2 games that have been developed to work on the 120Hz refresh rate panel of the device, but there are a couple or so that can work on 90Hz screens.
