Redmi Note 8 first global MIUI 10 update goes live ahead of release

The Redmi Note 8 was unveiled in China at the tail end of August. Like others before it, the Note 8 packs some punch at a very affordable price and in case you haven’t heard, the device’s “Pro” variant has already arrived in Europe.

The base Redmi Note 8 Pro with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage retails at €249 while the high-end variant with the same RAM and twice the storage retails at €269. These figures are equivalent to about INR 19,400 and INR 21,000, respectively.

But no, this article isn’t about the Redmi Note 8 Pro but the standard Note 8, which is also expected to start selling globally pretty soon. Earlier this month, the Note 8 was spotted on Xiaomi India’s RF Exposure certification list, suggesting that its launch in the country was imminent.

A few days ago, the Redmi Note 8 kernel source code went live alongside the first firmware update in China. And ahead of global availability, we have our hands on the first Redmi Note 8 software update for the global MIUI 10 ROM.

Codenamed “ginkgo” (the Redmi Note 8 Pro is codenamed “begonia”), the new Redmi Note 8 update has the full version MIUI 10.3.2.0.PCOMIXM. As you’d expect from any first-time software update for any device, the new Note 8 update doesn’t have much to show off in the changelog.

There are no dates as to when to expect the Redmi Note 8 to arrive in various markets outside China. However, the fact that we already have a ready Redmi Note 8 update for the global ROM means the official launch isn’t too far away.

In India, the Redmi 8A was unveiled today and the company is also teasing the arrival of its slightly superior counterpart, Redmi 8. These two are understudies to both the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro and now that they are here, the latter duo should also follow suit soon.

The Redmi Note 8 ships with a slightly weaker package compared to the Note 8 Pro that launched in Europe earlier this week. They have an identical front panel although the Pro’s is slightly bigger, but things are different on the back with the camera arrangements and the inside as well.

The standard Note 8’s screen size is 6.3 inches with a 1080p resolution and misses out on Gorilla Glass 5 protection and HDR, there’s a Snapdragon 665 SoC allied to 4/64GB or 6/64GB memory that isn’t UFS 2.1 like the Pro, a quad-lens 48MP+8MP+2MP+2MP main camera, and a 4000mAh battery, 500mAh smaller than the Pro.

The differences in specs mean the two will get different price tags when they arrive in India and other parts of the world, so you can be sure that the standard Note 8 won’t be anywhere near the equivalent asking price of INR 19,400 for the Note 8 Pro.
