Xiaomi partnered for the first time with Google for the Android One program based Mi A1 in 2017.

For those of you who are naive, the Android One is a project unveiled in 2014, in which smartphones build under this project are entitled to receive security updates for three years and major firmware updates for two years. Moreover, this was developed specifically for low-cost Android devices.

This might seem a nice project on paper, but it actually did not take off as planned especially here in India. Google also admitted to the fact that they got the timing wrong in bringing the Android One to India. However, it revived with the partnership with Xiaomi to launch their first Android One based smartphone, the Mi A1. And surprisingly, this smartphone was received well in the market.

A year later in 2018, Xiaomi again partnered with Google and brought in the second generation of Android One based smartphones, the Xiaomi Mi A2 and A2 Lite. Both the device brought in comprehensive upgrades from the 2017’s Mi A1.

Zoom past today, as promised under Android One, both the devices have started receiving the September 2019 security updates. Talking about the update received on the Mi A2 Lite, it wont eat much data pack as it weighs only 34.4MB in size.

According to users, the update fixes the multitasking functionality of the Mi A2 Lite as well. Apart from the security patch, the update improves the stability of the device and optimizes the performance. You can check out the screenshot of the Mi A2 Lite update below;

Now, looking at the update received on the Mi A2 smartphone, the update is also pretty small in size and it weighs only 69.5MB. Along with the security patch for the month of September, it does not carry any major feature and fixes the stability and performance of the device.

It is also, very nice to see that Xiaomi is keeping up with its promise under the Android One program and rolling out monthly security updates for both the Mi A2 and the A2 Lite. Which brings us to the question, whether the Mi A2 and the A2 lite will receive the Android 10 based update or not?

If we go according to the update cycle of the Android One, both the devices are eligible to receive the update. However, there is no confirmation regarding this piece of information. We will have to wait and see if there are any further developments in this regards.
