[Works with latest beta] T-Mobile Device Unlock app reportedly incompatible with Android 10

Another day, another Android 10 incompatibility story!

A major update always comes with plenty of side effects. Third party app compatibility is a primary topic of concern, as it is virtually impossible for the developers to thoroughly check the codebase and incorporate new set of APIs within days. I would say Google’s public beta program is certainly helpful in this context.

We know that Samsung is already testing Android 10 based One UI 2.0 builds on Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series, but their own Galaxy Wearable app is currently not compatible with the newest update of the operating system. Similar issues can be found on the official GoPro app as well.

The newest member in this list is T-Mobile. Well, the wireless carrier is not known for being an app developer, but they are already facing some undocumented issues while certifying the Android 10 update for Google Pixel 3/3 XL.

It could be the plain old network compatibility problems, but we don’t know anything for sure at this moment.

Back to the app part, T-Mobile usually bundles a handful of in-house apps in the carrier branded firmware. One of them is particularly interesting – the Device Unlock app.

The T-Mobile Device Unlock app comes pre-installed only on supported devices.

– The app is not listed in the Play Store, if the app was installed on a device before, it may appear in My apps & games > Installed. But you cannot install the app from this location.

– If the app is not listed, make sure it is not disabled or hidden on the device. The app will uninstall itself after a permanent unlock.

T-Mobile allows their customers to request an unlock code under certain conditions, and the aforementioned app is the gateway of the whole procedure. Guess what? The app is reportedly non-functional under Android 10.

I’m having the same issue and have an engineering ticket put in. It indeed appears to not be Q compatible which is silly because the betas have been out for ages.

At this moment, Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are the only two phones sold via T-Mobile that got the Android 10 OTA. The wireless carrier should resolve the glitch before the update lands on prominent non-Google phones and creates a havoc among end users.
