PSA for GoPro users: Don't install Android 10 update just yet

Are you an Android user who has been eyeing the latest update to Android 10, an OS that was formerly known as Android Q since its initial availability in March 2019?

If yes, you are probably getting ready to upgrade your Google Pixel, Essential Phone or maybe the surprise package in Redmi K20 Pro to the latest and greatest stable Android OS from Google right now.

The stable version of Android 10 started rolling out on September 3 and besides the Google Pixels, the Essential Phone and Redmi K20 Pro are the only other non-Google phones with access to the stable version. This means only a fraction of eligible devices now have access to the new OS.

If you are in this small bracket and you also happen to use the GoPro app on your phone, there is some bad news for you. Apparently, the GoPro app isn’t working with Android 10 yet, at least not for now.

I updated my Pixel to Android 10 and then found out it disabled my GoPro. Bummer. Glad this didn’t happen when I needed it most.

GoPro says the app hasn’t been optimized to work on Android 10 just yet, but it should do so when the next update to the app is released. How long the wait for this version will take to arrive is still unknown to us.

So, if you depend on the GoPro app on your Android smartphone, be sure to stick with Android Pie for now, at least until the app gets a new software update to include support for Android 10.

It’s quite unfortunate that this is actually happening. As noted earlier, Android Q beta has been around since March 2019. This early availability was meant for app developers to get their apps ready to work with Android 10 from day 1 of the official release.

It’s completely unacceptable, but not unexpected from gopro. They’ve been in beta for a long time and developers had a chance to be ready, so this is a nice fail on their behalf.

GoPro has started sending out alerts warning users of the app about its incompatibility with Android 10, although it’s obviously too late for those who already switched to the new OS.

There was a message prior to this saying I won’t be able to connect to the camera with Android 10. Which popped up as a notification just after I’d upgraded.

Just as I was about to update, I got the notification. And I need it really soon for an upcoming trip. The beta has been available for months. How could they not be ready?

GoPro has reached out with a promise of releasing an updated version 6.1 very soon with support for Android 10. At the moment, the GoPro app is stuck on version 6.0.

The bad news is we are still working on compatibility, so if you do update to Android 10 and you’re using the current GoPro App (v6.0), your device will not be able to pair or connect with your GoPro. This is true for both new and existing GoPro cameras that you’ve controlled via the GoPro App. We recommend holding off on updating to Android 10 until we have a chance to rollout the 6.1 app update.
