After a failed attempt at modularity with the LG G5 back in 2016, South Korean company LG made a significant step back up with the LG G6, a device that was well-received compared to its predecessor the year before.
Following its March 2017 launch, the LG G6 has now been around for over two years, which is why instances of the device receiving software updates are beginning to fade. It happens to every aging device.
Today, the newer LG G8 ThinQ has more attention from the company than not just the G6, but also the LG G7 ThinQ from 2018. Even so, the G7 ThinQ has already received the update to Android 9 Pie yet the story is quite different with the G6.
Sure, the LG G6 is still expected to receive an update to Android Pie at some point. In fact, the company is already working on something for the near future.
Back in July, the first Pie beta build for the G6 leaked and as I write this, the device recently received an update to the Pie beta in Europe, however, when exactly the stable version will arrive is probably not even known to the company itself.
The update arrives as the fifth Pie beta for the H870 model, bumping the software from version V20j to V29e, a step closer to the final release of Android Pie as version V30a.
As you all wait for the LG G6 Android Pie stable update to arrive, the company is pushing a minor security update to variants of the handset with model numbers H870S and H870DS. The two updates have slightly different software versions as you are about to see.
For owners of model H870S of the G6, the new update is arriving as version V20o and weighs 166.85MB. Apparently, this update installs May 2019 security patch and improves the usability and functionality of the phone.
If you own the H870DS variant of the G6, the new update is arriving as version V20q and as per the changelog, the usability and functionality of the phone improve after installing the new software.
According to one recipient of the new V20q update on LG G6 H870DS, the update doesn’t bring any major changes, especially on battery life, but it does feel faster after this update.
Both updates are airborne, meaning it may take days before all H870S and H870DS variants of the LG G6 receive their respective OTA download notifications. Be sure to try forcing the update via Settings > System in case the notification takes ages to arrive.
US Cellular & COMCAST (Xfinity mobile) LG G8 August security update is reportedly also live
As mentioned earlier, the newer LG G8 ThinQ receives more love from LG than the G6. For instance, at a time when the latter is receiving May update, the G8 ThinQ on U.S. Cellular and Comcast (Xfinity Mobile) is reportedly receiving the latest August 2019 update.
Apparently, the update is available for download as an OTA, through LG Bridge or even from LG servers, but we haven’t come across any reports of the said OTA updates. Do let us know if you receive any of these updates on your LG phone via the comments section below.
