If you are into Apple’s ecosystem, you should be aware of AirDrop. The hybrid ad-hoc service is built on top of Bluetooth (for discovery) and Wi-Fi (for actual data transfer), through which Apple devices can seamlessly transfer files across themselves without any third party services or mandatory internet/cloud connectivity.
Third party apps (like SHAREit or Xender) tried to bring a similar experience for Android users, but they are not as powerful as a native solution. Google deprecated Android Beam, a NFC based solution for file exchanging. Afterwards, they also embrace the Wi-Fi based P2P file sharing via their own Files app.
While OEMs often bundle their in-house apps for such jobs, Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo partnered a few days ago to create a standardized protocol for file transfer between mobile devices. Their consortium, which is known as Inter-Transfer Alliance (automated translation), focuses on Bluetooth to achieve up to 20 MB/second speed.
Other companies are free to join the alliance, so that the tech can be expanded as much as possible. Matter of fact, the latest public beta of ColorOS for OPPO Reno comes with the first implementation of this cross-brand one click file exchange method.
The Reno lineup was launched with Android Pie based ColorOS 6 out of the box. The Chinese OEM kickstarted the open beta initiative during July, while the phone was also enlisted for Android Q public beta testing. Guess they are pretty much serious about enhancing the software experience of this unique shark fin camera phone.
Unlike the initial beta build, users can now simply join the bleeding edge development by navigating to Settings => Software Update and fill in the necessary information. Only the Chinese OPPO Reno units (PCAM00) are supported right now, and& software version PCAM00_11.A.17 is a mandatory prerequisite to join the program.
The changelog of the newest update (20190823) for OPPO Reno is as follows (translated from Chinese):
