Google Chromecast is one of those little gadgets you plug into your TV, enabling you to stream content from multiple platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, and so on. This same gadget can also be handy if you want to view those photos you took using your phone on a bigger screen.

The latter feature can be quite handy for those who take lots of photos and would like to show them off to the rest of the family members on a bigger screen. According to Google, you can:

Showcase your Google Photos albums, see the weather, time and more on your TV with Ambient Mode on Chromecast.

Google-Chromecast

Honestly, the above feature has come through for me on several occasions, but it seems not everyone is having a good time using Google Photos and Chromecast. Apparently, some users say the Google Photos app on their phones no longer displays the option (icon) to cast photos via Google Chromecast.

The Chromecast icon was in the Google Photos app before, but after the update to version 4.23 of the photos app, things seem to have gone south. Not to leave you confused, though, this issue is limited to iPhone users of Photos.

I was able to cast my Google photos on TV via Chromecast, but now I don’t even see the cast icon. I’ve tried updating & re-downloading the Google Photos app. I’m able to use it from my iPad, but not my iPhone.

The chromecast cast icon is missing from the ios google photos app. It seems to be after the 4.23 update which was on the 15th of this month. It was there a few days ago. All devices are on the same network. I am able to cast from the pc / laptop and it works fine. I am able to cast from other ios apps (youtube) with no issue. The cast icon is just missing from the ios app. Anyone else having this issue? Has it been moved? Has it been removed for a reason? Any help is appreciated.

Plenty of other affected users have jumped in to confirm their grievances to Google, all but suggesting the issue is quite widespread and needs urgent attention from the necessary team.

Besides the Google forums, affected users also took to Twitter to air their frustrations at the lack of attention from Google. And this appears to have worked magic in the affected users’ favor.

@googlephotos hey, I see I’m not the only one having trouble casting photos to chrome cast. iPhone 7+, latest software. Cast icon not appearing. Tried on both of our chromecasts. Any solutions?

@googlenest I’m using an iPhone 6s software version 12.4 and google photos won’t chromecast. I uninstalled the app, restarted my phone, rebooted chromecast and still nothing. Tried on iPad mini 2 with 12.4 software and also nothing. How do I fix it? Other apps casting fine.

In their response, the Google Nest team has confirmed they are aware of the issue and a fix is currently in the works. How soon this fix will be released is still unknown, though, but we hope it won’t take longer than usual.

No amount of workarounds seem to fix this issue for now, so the only option is to stick around and wait for the update that fixes the bug. Again, we don’t know when this fix will be released, but we’ll follow up the matter and update this post when it’s out.
