PiunikaWeb readers may recall that we wrote an article about a revamped Mi Pilot program. Xiaomi included majority of their product portfolio in that initiative in order to pilot test the upcoming major update (aka MIUI 11) via global stable branch. Some phones are also going to be upgraded to Android Q.

Besides the Redmi K20 series (K20 Pro already got the MIUI flavored Android Q via beta channel), we can only spot two more Redmi phones in the aforementioned list. As expected, the newest Redmi Note lineup – Redmi Note 7(S) and Note 7 Pro – should receive Android Q during the first quarter of 2020.

The roadmap is all about the stable channel. So the phones would taste the first version of Android Q via beta and/or Mi Pilot program within months or so. Thing is, the current Pie based MIUI 10 builds are not exactly very stable on Redmi Note 7 family. Remember the horrible camera lag issues faced by Redmi Note 7 Pro owners?

The Chinese OEM tried to address those bugs in the last update (MIUI 10.3.12.0) which also brought July security patches to Redmi Note 7 Pro. However, the official device sub-forum is filled with complains about high battery drain and poor cellular connectivity.

The non-Pro variant of Redmi Note 7 (succeeded by Redmi Note 7S in India) recently got August security patch with lockscreen pocket mode. An equivalent OTA is now reportedly available on Indian Redmi Note 7 Pro units as well.

System

– Updated Android Security Patch to August 2019. Increased system security.

App lock

– New: Locking Google contacts is available now

Let me remind you, Xiaomi often included fixes that are not mentioned in the changelog. Don’t you think 320 MB of incremental update is little heavy for such small changes?

The update is currently rolling out in batches, while wider availability should happen within a week or so. Due to the low volume of recipients and the age of the build, gathering feedback about battery life improvements is not feasible at this moment. Rest assured, we are monitoring the situation.
