Realme X Android Q update set to arrive next year, Realme support says

Oppo’s Realme sub-brand has been around for a little over a year now, but its already making waves in the Indian market. The company now sits in the list of top 5 smartphone vendors in the Asian sub-continent, even beating its parent company in stats from Q2 2019.

There aren’t many Realme smartphones on the market, yet the sub-brand already commands a sizeable market share of 9% in India alone. This is thanks to devices released this year like the Realme 3, Realme 3 Pro, Realme C2 and more recently, the Realme X.

The Realme X is the first from the company to don a full-screen, notch-less display panel courtesy of the pop-up selfie camera. It’s also the first Realme handset with an in-display fingerprint scanner, which makes it stand out from the competition, but there’s more to come in 2020.

For sure, the Realme X packs some punch on matters performance and photography, just like other Oppo-related smartphones. It runs the most up to date software out of the box in ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie. But with Android Q around the corner, the usual questions are now showing up.

Realme X owners want to know if and when Android Q will be available.

It’s public knowledge that the support team of many smartphone companies is usually less informed about internal happenings like software update timelines. While it’s hard to believe the response the Realme support offered with respect to the above query, it’s as realistic as it can get.

For a device like the Realme X’s caliber, it’s nothing strange that a major Android OS update is set to take ages. But for a device that is the latest flagship from a company that is enjoying significant growth, this would’ve been a great opportunity to keep getting more fans.

To be fair, though, the company has one device in the ongoing Android Q beta program – the Realme 3 Pro. When compared to the Realme X, there’s one major similarity that could play a role in hastening the Realme X Q update – they share the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor.

Recent reports claim the Realme 3 Pro will receive an update to Android Q without ColorOS on top and instead, there’s talk of a RealmeOS skin going forward. The authenticity of these reports remains a major concern, but if true, the Realme X should also get RealmeOS running on top of Q.

As noted earlier, Realme is new in the market. The company doesn’t have an official software update schedule that we can use for reference purposes. That said, we can’t really say much about Android Q updates for other Realme phones, but we hope they get at least two Android OS upgrades.
