[August update announced] New Moto G7 Power update brings June security patch to some units

The G series from Motorola emerged as a fresh reboot after being acquired by Google. Beginning with 2013’s Moto G, the Android community eventually formed a cult following towards the budget-friendly midranger running close to stock Android with periodic updates.

However, the lineup began to lose popularity after Lenovo took over the Motorola’s smartphone division from the Mountain View giant. Once known for speedy software OTAs, Moto G3 failed to receive even one major version upgrade!

The vexing saga continued with subsequent iterations, as Lenovorola is getting tough competitions from companies like Xiaomi and Honor in the designated price segment.

Their 2019 lineup consists of four different variations – regular Moto G7, G7 Play, G7 Plus and G7 Power. The last one is carrying a whopping 5,000 mAh battery (hence the ‘Power’ moniker). In terms of performance, Motorola opted for a mediocre Snapdragon 632 SoC for the model.

Although the phone runs Android Pie out of the box, there is this weird delay in updates. I know it is hard to imagine, but apparently a lot of users did not receive any security update since December of 2018!

I bought 2 Moto g7 Power phones (Model XT1955-4) both still stuck at the Android Version 9.0, PP029.80-27 (December 1, 2018).

That’s a good point, but Android security updates should be provided ASAP, not after months.

Matter of fact, some Moto G7 Power owners in different regions got intermittent monthly updates with January/March/May security patches. Problem is, there is no easy way to capture those update packages like OnePlus and apply them manually.

Due to the existence of different carrier branded variant of Moto G7 Power, crossflashing can be risky. You may entirely lose the ability to send and/or receive calls with a botched up update.

The official support forum of Lenovo/Motorola is hosting a long thread regarding the lack of updates and associated unresolved bugs on Moto G7 Power. Frustrated users are flocking to different online platforms (reddit, XDA) to find a way to get rid of this annoying situation.

Fortunately Motorola is pushing a new OTA for the phone, albeit with June security patches instead of August. Nonetheless, the rollout seems pretty wider as users across Europe and US are reportedly getting this update (build tag PPO29.114-134).

Depending on your base installed version, the size of the incremental update can differ. There are some reports about distorted sound after installing this build, so don’t forget to tell us your experience after installing this OTA.
