[Available on S10] Samsung might backport Note 10's DeX features to older Galaxy flagships

Samsung’s grand plan to bridge the gap between smartphones and PCs is DeX, which you should be aware of unless you are living under a rock these days. Connect the phone with an external display, pair a keyboard-mouse combo and you are ready to rock.

Despite the low adoption rate, Samsung backed up their strategy by continuously improving and adding new features to the DeX mode in Galaxy phones and tablets. Linux on DeX aka LoD is one of the prime example of that, via which you can literally boot up a complete Ubuntu environment in seconds.

Initially available only on Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4, the Korean OEM eventually expanded the support and added Galaxy S10 lineup. They even backported Linux on Dex to Galaxy S9 family with Android Pie based One UI update.

With the official release of Galaxy Note 10, Samsung brought a huge makeover to the DeX module. The desktop like interface can now be invoked simply by connecting your phone (Note 10 family at this moment) with your PC, which can run side by side the primary OS (Windows/macOS).

That’s not the end, as notification syncing or file sharing can be done seamlessly with the improved version of DeX when paired with a supported OS. The convergence is really happening this time.

Just connect your Galaxy Note10 with your PC via the Link to Windows setting and get instant access to your Android phone’s content that matters to you. Now there’s no need to dig for your phone to check notifications, schedule a ride to the airport, or even text. And you can finally stop emailing yourself photos as you can drag and drop photos directly into your email or your PowerPoint presentation.

Technically you can still achieve a similar unification experience with multiple third party services. Even Samsung has an app called SideSync for integrating your phone with PC, but combining the same with DeX mode is indeed innovative.

Those who are rocking older Galaxy S or Note phones, don’t worry. Samsung might bring the same level of experience with a DeX mode update to Galaxy S10e/S10/S10+, Note 9 and all the way to Galaxy S9/S9+ with the upcoming One UI 2 update (based on Android Q).

As you can see, the info came from veteran leakster Ishan Agarwal. Although he dodged the query to disclose the actual source, the statement seems pretty much feasible. Given the track record of Ishan, I should say the leak is quite substantial (but don’t take it without a pinch of salt!).

Samsung has finally delivered the September security patch for Exynos Galaxy S10 series. The update also brings Galaxy Note 10 specific DeX improvements to the S10 lineup. Details here.
