This story is being continuously updated….new updates are being added at the bottom…..
Google’s Android Pie came with an interesting and useful feature. Dubbed Digital Wellbeing, the feature gives users a clear picture of their daily digital habits, allowing them limit their tech usage and gain back precious time they otherwise spend on not-so-useful stuff on their phone or tablet.
Needless to say, being a big feature from Google, Digital Wellbeing was first made available to Pixel and Android One devices, before making way to devices from other OEMs like Samsung. Well, another name has been added to the list of devices that now support the functionality.
It’s Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2.
First reported by XDA Developers, a new update has started rolling out to the Max Pro M2 which brings the much requested Digital Wellbeing functionality.
Arriving with version number 16.2017.1906.066, the update also brings along June security patch as well as some other changes. Following is the list of other changes:
- Dark mode power-off icon is no longer black
- FM Radio has new icon
- Vibration intensity has been improved
- Headset low volume issue fixed
As XDA notes, the update is currently only rolling out in Japan. The publication has also shared a firmware download link, suggesting non-Japanese users to replace “JP” in the package name with “WW” and then install it.
But should you do it? What does the company say. Well, we tried searching for an official word, and found a comment from Asus forum moderator on the matter. The moderator says:
Sorry for any inconvenience. JP-16.2017.1906.066 is for JP SKU only. Software update cannot transfer the software SKU and downgrade the software version. Wrong SKU may cause update failure, please update the same SKU version only. Please wait for WW SKU firmware, thank you
So there you go. The moderator is asking users from non-Japanese regions to wait for the update to roll out in their region, as flashing this Japan focused update may cause the installation to fail.
Sadly, there’s no information as of now when the update will begin rolling for other regions. So wait is the only option you have if you don’t want to flash the Japanese firmware.
Max Pro M2 Pie update
The device received the Pie update back in April this year, but the new update brought along many serious issues with it, including screen flickering, glitchy brightness slider, buggy volume control, and deteriorated speaker sound, among others.
Unsurprisingly, after goofing up so badly, the Taiwanese company decided to pull the update. Then after promising improvements, a new Pie update started rolling out later in April.
Then, a few weeks later, the device got the May security update.
Update 1 (July 13)
June update with a slightly different build number is rolling out to ZenFone Max Pro M2 devices in India. Complete story here.
