New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

The relationship between Xiaomi and Android goes back to the days when the Chinese company encouraged modders to use their Patchrom tools to make MIUI ports for third party devices. With time, MIUI became a worthy alternative of vanilla Android.

For a large chunk of consumers, MIUI and its internal functionalities are godsend. Yes, the background analytics and data collection through telemetry are scary, but regular people are happy to enjoy new features and periodic updates (ignorance is bliss!).

Like other Android skins from competitors, the default launcher of Xiaomi’s MIUI lacks the app drawer. The iOS-esque design drives users to put app icons on the homescreen.

While the launcher is synonymous to the whole UI of the operating system for a lot of people, Xiaomi recognized that their customers are looking for third party launchers with built-in icon changing support and various other customization options.

The Chinese OEM spawned POCO Launcher to address the situation. Not only the new launcher comes bundled with Pocophone F1, but end users can install it on other non-Xiaomi/Redmi/Poco phones as well.

Looks like Xiaomi engineers accidentally pushed a buggy build as several Poco users are facing a weird bug after installing the latest update of the launcher. The home screen is getting populated by infinite number of shortcuts of the inbox RAM cleaner/clear memory app.

I recently found this app i don’t remember installing called scram jet. So I removed it from the main screen, bit couldn’t find it on the other screen you get from sliding up.

After a day I looked back to find I now have 5-6 icons on my main menu for scramjet. Is this a virus? Is it a glitch?

Initially users were confused about the origin of the bug, as the phone is not getting any new update via stable channel for a while. The last OTA update was MIUI V10.3.4.0.PEJMIXM, which was rolled out to some regions at the beginning of April.

In fact, the Poco team entirely skips the May update in favor of a cumulative update in early June. Alvin Tse, the head of Pocophone Global was puzzled at first after viewing the bug report.

Is this a custom ROM? Or something wrong with the Dual app feature? I have not seen anything
like this.

While affected users are trying to find out the exact reason behind this abnormal behavior, one forum moderator of Xiaomi pinpointed the glitch on the latest update of the Poco Launcher itself.

The last stable update I received for POCO launcher was April 18, with 2.6.6.3. No issues with me here. Have you updated it through any other channel? Maybe Telegram links or something? Or are you on Beta ROM with newer launcher update too?

Although the latest version is 2.6.6.3 on the Play Store, the company is slowly pushing a new build (2.6.7.3) to select users which is allegedly causing the anomaly.

At this moment, it is not clear whether Xiaomi has reverted back the launcher update or not. The volume of complaints are gradually rising across various platforms, which is not a good sign.

As a temporary workaround, affected users can uninstall the buggy update and revert back to the latest stable (2.6.6.3) build. They can also try lightweight but feature-rich third party launchers like the Rootless Pixel Launcher by Amir Zaidi or its forks.
