[Pie update rolling out in China] Redmi Y2 Android Pie 9.0 update under testing, new update (v10.3.1.0) rolling out

In one of our previous articles, Kingshuk De touched upon Xiaomi’s ever-confusing lineup of regional variants and re-branded models. For instance, while Redmi Y series was launched in India as Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite, the same phones were released in China as Redmi Note 5A Prime and Note 5A.

The same happened with the next in line Redmi Y2 that was rebranded as Redmi S2 in China. In fact, Redmi Y2/S2 is the only Xiaomi phone that despite being capable of a 64-bit ROM (considering Snapdragon 625 SoC) was shipped with 32-bit ROM.

Redmi Y2/S2 was launched with MIUI 9 and Android 8.1 Oreo back in 2018. While Y2 users await Android Pie, running down their expectations, it appeared the company might cancel Android 9.0 Pie on Redmi Y2 and abandon it just like its predecessor.

Reason being, Redmi Y2/S2 was initially included in the list of Xiaomi devices that were to be upgraded to Pie. But the status for Redmi Y2/S2 was changed from internal testing to ‘suspension of recruitment’ (translated from Chinese) when a revised list was published by MIUI beta organizers.

The news about Xiaomi cancelling Pie on Redmi Y2 spread like wild fire. Consequently, Xiaomi gave a statement on the matter denying any such change in plan and confirmed that Redmi Y2 will indeed get the Pie update.

While there are some speculations going on about the Android 9 Pie availability on Redmi Y2, do note that Redmi Y2 will get Android 9 Pie in the future for sure and hence it doesn’t affect the schedule of the MIUI Stable ROM release including Android base upgrade and software support

And now we have got another status update on the matter. Don’t worry, it’s a good news.

We’re getting reports that Android 9.0 Pie update is under internal testing on Redmi Y2. The information came from a the company’s official help forum a device team member while reverting back to users who’ve been inquiring about Pie’s arrival.

The device team member said:

Currently Pie is under Internal beta testing, please wait patiently it will be available soon.

Basically, MIUI beta organizers’ first list indicated Pie’s internal testing on Redmi Y2 in Q1. Then a revised list conveyed that Pie for Y2 may have been cancelled. Later on, Xiaomi clarified that Y2 will surely get Pie. And now it has come to light that internal testing has been resumed.

Here’s hoping the Chinese OEM gets done with the internal as well as beta testing on Redmi Y2 soon so that users can get to see the much-awaited Pie’s stable build rolling on their units. Fingers crossed.

While Pie is being internally tested, a new stable update bearing build number 10.3.1.0 has already been pushed on Redmi Y2 devices. As per changelog, the update brings in April security patch.

The update also fixes issues like ending calls taking longer than expected, call time bubble overlapping notification icons, face unlock prompt taking longer to disappear, low battery icon a miss in landscape mode and incorrect notification badges on WhatsApp.

Coming to what new it brings, now incoming calls will be displayed in a floating window while playing games. Meaning, lesser annoyance and distraction. Also now users can stay on lock screen after using face unlock as well as restrict notification shade from opening on lock screen.

It’s worth stressing, the update is currently available to limited Redmi Y2 units. As confirmed by the device team’s member, a more wider roll out will begin after a successful feedback. Here’s what they said on different threads regarding the roll out.
