Poco F1 picture-in-picture (PIP) doesn't work with full screen gestures, company aware

Transitioning from the dedicated keypad based design to touch oriented interaction was not easy for everyone. Smartphone makers tried out different ideas, including separate hardware components like stylus to bridge the gap.

As soon as the consumers are settled with the touch based interactivity, the smartphone industry is developing alternate mechanism. Apple popularize the concept of full screen gestures, which is later adopted by multiple Android OEMs.

Google already incorporated limited gesture support in Android Pie. With the upcoming Android Q, the Mountain View engineers are cooking something secret to spice up the gesture scene.

Meanwhile LG came up with this groundbreaking/weird most (you choose) ‘Air Motion’ gesture with 2019’s G8 ThinQ. I guess the community is not ready for it yet.

With the introduction of nearly bezel less phones like Mi MIX series, Xiaomi revealed their own version of full screen gestures with MIUI 9.5.

Full Screen Gestures are an intuitive implementation that all Xiaomi users will be able to easily adapt. All of Xiaomi phones that feature full screen displays (eg. MIX 2, Redmi 5, Redmi Note 5, etc.) will get Full Screen Gestures update via MIUI 9.5.

The Chinese OEM quickly jumped to the next version of the gesture model with MIUI 10, dubbed as Full-Screen Gesture 2.0.

Full-Screen Gesture 1.0 is implemented through System UI. Because it is less difficult to implement, it is the current mainstream solution, but it is quite resource-intensive, and there may be a situation of frame dropping. In Full-Screen gesture 2.0, we redesigned an animation framework to break through the limitations of the original System UI.

However, the new implementation started to cause issues with the built-in picture-in-picture (PIP) mode – especially with apps like Google Maps.

PICTURE IN PICTURE is not working on google maps using full screen mode (gestures) because the device does not match the swipe up gesture with “home” button. Works with buttons, and not in full screen mode.

After scavenging the official Mi forums as well as other platforms, we notice that the bug is not limited to Pocophone F1. Users having Mi MIX 2, Mi 8, Redmi Note 5 Pro and other phones are experiencing the same glitch since the introduction of Full-Screen gesture 2.0.

Directly swipe up to homescreen from any Picture in Picture (PIP) apps will not show PIP window. in order to show it, we need to swipe up to Recents screen and then the PIP window will appear. Example of apps not working, Google Maps and Youtube.

I believe this is cause from new Full Screen Gestures 2.0 implementation that override the behaviour of current app when returning to Homescreen. Please fix this issue. Thank you.

in my redmi note 5 pro some time there are goto home screen and open recently gestures not working
if i do locked and jnlock my phone they do working after sometime they happen same…

Users tried to reach out to the company by filing bug reports, tweeting and creating several threads regarding this nasty bug. Even the moderators are aware of this issues, but they are helpless.

The bug is still at large, even after the latest update in stable and beta channels.

still exsists on Beta .28….

come on Dev’s can’t be so hard to fix.

Fortunately, the MIUI bug tracker team has now picked it up.

Alvin Tse, head of Pocophone Global, is in the loop regarding the recent development. Certainly this is a positive indication.

According to some users, swiping up for Recents menu instead of Home may work as a temporary solution for this pesky issue.

The exponential growth of the so-called ‘full screen’ phones is a major catalyst behind the progress of full screen gestures in Android. Now that Android Q is coming with a large number of integrated gestures, don’t you think it would be better to adopt them as a standard?
