Samsung Galaxy S10 Super Steady mode: Check out how awesome it is

Outdoor sports, especially that of extreme adventure genre, help (or should I say force?) the consumer camera industry to spawn a separate branch. Dubbed as action cam, these little handy gadgets can do continuous capture of the action in high definition, without you having to interact with the camera.

I know, I know – GoPro is the kind of action-cams. They actually popularized this genre of gadgets and became a famed name among the sports/gadget/tech lovers.

Stabilizing the content is a major challenge in this domain. It is not at all feasible to use traditional bulky camera stabilizers with them, given the use cases.

Instead of the mechanical components, nowadays camera makers prefer to use a multi-axis gyro stabilization to enable the use of zoom lenses. It also helps to make the dimension of the final hardware small, which is another requirement.

With the release of the Galaxy S10, Samsung now wants to challenge the stabilizing feature of action cameras.

Believe it or not, the South Korean tech giant is calling their implementation as ‘Super steady’ mode, which is really showing impressive results.

Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ record like a pro-level action camera utilizing the Ultra Wide Camera and predictive software. Super steady gives you smooth videos, even when your journey is on the adventurous side.

A quick recap on the camera details of Galaxy S10: Samsung went one step further and integrated 3 individual camera modules inside the regular S10 and S10+ as rear cams.

The primary camera features a 12 MP sensor with 1.4µm pixels and 26mm-equivalent, f/1.5–f/2.4 variable aperture lens, Dual-Pixel AF & OIS.

Next comes the ultra wide one – a 16 MP sensor featuring 1.0µm pixels and 13mm-equivalent, f/2.4-aperture lens. The third one is a telephoto thingy, which carries a 12 MP sensor with 1.0µm pixels and 52mm-equivalent, f/2.4 aperture lens as well as PDAF and OIS.

Samsung engineers made it possible to use electronic stabilization available in all modes except 2160p/60fps.

However, the Super steady mode is a different story altogether. This mode solely uses the 16 MP ultra wide camera, and that’s how it cuts down the autofocusing.

Moreover, the mode only allows 1080p video capture, due to resource constraints (CPU processing, video stream handling etc.).

If you are ready to ignore that, the end results are quite stunning!

The S10 user community members are thrilled to experience this feature. Some of they are already comparing it with GoPro cams.

It is worth mentioning that the Galaxy S10+ scored an impressive 97 in DxOMark video test. The stabilization feature individually achieved 94.

The Galaxy S10 supports both H.264 and H.265 codecs for video recording. The latter is obviously preferred if you prefer smaller videos. There is a small caveat though – H.265 videos are still not compatible with every stand alone players.
