It has many useful features that make it easy for one to watch videos, one of them being ‘video transcription support’.
Thanks to this feature, one can skim through a long video for the key points even without having to fully watch it. However, some platform users are unhappy because they are unable to use it.
YouTube ‘Show transcript’ option missing or not showing up
According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), multiple users are experiencing an issue where they are unable to view the transcripts for videos uploaded on YouTube.
It is alleged that the ‘Show transcript’ option does not appear when one press or clicks the three dots next to the platform’s player control buttons.
Due to this bug, it has become difficult for people to search for specific terms or keyphrases through the content. The issue has popped up recently and affects only the desktop version of YouTube.
A Redditor complains that they used the feature quite frequently, but now they have to manually search through the videos to find useful information.
Another platform user says that the feature was very helpful for them in watching and learning from educational videos. Now, they are having difficulties skimming through the content.

In the web version “show transcript” does not appear. There is an error on YouTube. Please fix it. In the Android application, it does appear.

Some have tried visiting the website on different machines and browsing in incognito mode on different web browsers but to no avail.
Official response
Fortunately, YouTube has responded to the matter and said that transcriptions should be available in most of the videos.
If the option is not visible at your end, then you can try restarting the app or your device, clearing cache and cookies, or updating your system and applications.
