Original story (published on Feb 20) follows:

Not long after releasing the Sony Xperia 5, Japanese tech giant Sony announced a new mid-range handset for the local market dubbed Xperia 8.

If you have been following Sony’s latest smartphone naming scheme, you’ll know that models with a smaller number are the premium offerings and as the number goes higher, the devices veer off into the midrange territory.

For instance, the Xperia 1 is the most premium Sony smartphone today and on the other end, you find the Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus. Granted, the Xperia 8 falls in the midrange category, something that is well justified by the use of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset.

The device borrows from its Xperia 10 counterparts by rocking a 6-inch 21:9 screen, but takes things a notch higher by including Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 technology, the same found on the glass back panel as well.

Sticking with the rear panel, the Xperia 8 has a pair of cameras with a 12MP main and 8MP ultrawide angle lenses. Sony did a great job including things like IP65/68 rating for dust and water resistance and 18W fast charging, but for some reason, you get a mediocre 2760mAh battery.

For a device that packs a 6-inch FHD+ LCD display screen, having such a small battery unit is a joke, especially when you factor in the asking price of about $500 (RRP).

In terms of software, which is the subject of this article, you get Android 9 Pie pre-installed, but Sony is expected to push the Xperia 8 Android 10 update at some point, probably alongside the Xperia 10 Android 10 update.

From the look of things, though, it seems the Xperia 8 Android 10 update isn’t coming anytime soon. A couple of days ago, the company published a new update for the device that is still based on Android 9 Pie, but bumps the security patch level to January 2020.

The airborne update is arriving as version 56.0.C.0.436 and since it may take time to arrive, we have the link to download the firmware and install it manually right away.

  • Device: Sony Xperia 8
  • Channel: Stable
  • Version: 56.0.C.0.436
  • Android: 9

For now, it’s not known when Sony will push the Xperia 8 Android 10 update, but when it does, we will be here to let you know of its arrival.

Update 1 (May 18, 2020)
